DePuy Synthes' Make To Order (MTO) Team is recruiting for a Manufacturing Engineer, located in Leeds.

The MTO Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for delivering high‑quality design, engineering and manufacturing activities within the Made-to-Order (MTO) team. This role supports the creation, development, manufacturing and delivery of patient‑specific implants, instruments and prototypes, ensuring technical robustness, compliance, and timely execution of work.

The role requires design & engineering skills, an organised and pragmatic engineering attitude, and the ability to collaborate effectively across functions. The engineer will work with a high degree of autonomy and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead design, engineering and case management of custom-made devices and prototypes, compliance with engineering standards, device regulations, and company procedures.
  • Support Engineering and Production to ensure manufactured devices meet customer requirements.
  • Act as subject matter expert for engineering technology tools such as CAD, CAM, CMM and manufacturing automation.
  • Manage end‑to‑end case activities and prototype requests, working closely with Surgeons, Commercial, and R&D partners to understand and meet specific needs.
  • Create and check CAD models and assemblies, detailed drawings, Bills of Material (BOMs), CAM Programs and manufacturing documentation.
  • Ensure DFM principles and GD&T are incorporated appropriately into all design outputs.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across design, engineering and manufacturing of MTO devices.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Typically degree qualified in an engineering or scientific subject area such as Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working to strict delivery schedules; proactive and self‑motivated.
  • CAD and CAM skills and understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Solid understanding of DFM, GD&T, and engineering drawing standards.
  • Quality‑ and compliance‑focused approach.
  • Clear, concise communicator—written, visual, and verbal.
  • Pragmatic engineering problem solver with ability to distinguish critical issues.
  • Adaptable, positive, and comfortable with change.
  • Effective team collaborator, able to work both autonomously and under guidance.

Preferred:

  • Practical understanding of medical device materials and CNC manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with ERP systems and regulatory documentation.
