We’re looking for an MLRO that will act as the designated regulatory function holder, responsible for financial crime compliance for the company’s payment services activities, while ensuring that the company meets all obligations under Maltese law. The role requires strong independence, seniority, and the ability to operate effectively within a fast-scaling, global payments business.

Responsibilities
  • Act as the appointed Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) under the PML/FTR, FIAU Implementing Procedures, serving as the primary point of contact with the FIAU, MFSA and SMB and other regulators as may be required.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain the company’s AML/CFT policies, procedures, and controls in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the Company remains compliant with all relevant AML/CFT laws, regulations, regulatory requirements in a transformative legislation landscape.
  • Develop and maintain the Business Risk Assessment (BRA), Customer Risk Assessment (CRA)  and ensure a robust risk-based approach across customers, products, delivery channels, and jurisdictions.
  • Oversee Customer Due Diligence (CDD/KYC), onboarding, and ongoing due diligence monitoring processes.
  • Implement and oversee transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and adverse media checks.
  • Receive, review and assess internal suspicious transaction/activity reports and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Ensure suspicious transactions and activities are reported to the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) accurately and within the required timeframes.
  • Support, oversee and analyse risks identified through audits and risk assessments, implement appropriate control mechanisms, and ensure remediation actions are completed within agreed timelines.
  • Take responsibility for AML/CFT regulatory reporting, including the preparation and submission of the Risk Evaluation Questionnaire (REQ) and other required regulatory submissions.
  •  Maintain appropriate AML/CFT records and documentation in accordance to regulatory and internal requirements, whilst taking into account relevant retention periods.
  • Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to ensure compliance-by-design.
  • Provide advise to management on AML/CFT matters.
  • Deliver AML training programs and promote a strong compliance culture.
  • Prepare regular MLRO reports to senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably required by the Company from time to time.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Previous experience as MLRO, Deputy MLRO in a Fintech environment is essential.
  • Must be eligible to be approved by the Malta Financial Services Authority
  • Hands-on experience with transaction monitoring systems, KYC/CDD frameworks, and STR reporting
  • Excellent communication skills for both internal and external interactions.
  • High level of integrity, professional ethics and sound judgement.
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of risk-based AML frameworks.
  • Highly developed sense of teamwork and cooperation.
  • Excellent attention to detail, planning and organisational skills.
  • Proactive and able to work effectively on your own initiative.
  • Ability to work effectively and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Positive attitude and passion for work.
  • Based in Malta and is fluent in English, both written and spoken.
Advantages
  • Minimum 5–8 years of experience in AML/CFT, compliance, or financial crime within payments, fintech, banking, or e-money institutions.
  • Has already been approved (PQ’d) for this role.
  • A relevant professional qualification in compliance, law, or financial crime (e.g. ICA, CAMS, legal qualification)

Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience as an MLRO or Deputy MLRO in a fintech environment
