About this role
What team will you be on?
The Model Portfolio team within Multi-Asset Strategies & Solutions (MASS) manages a large and growing model portfolio platform serving an increasingly diverse set of client needs. As the business expands its customization capabilities, the team is investing heavily in technology, quantitative methods, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) to increase the scale, efficiency, and sophistication of portfolio management.
This role is uniquely positioned at the intersection of investing and technology. Rather than operating as a traditional technology resource supporting investment teams from a distance, you will work directly alongside portfolio managers to identify portfolio-management challenges, prototype solutions, build production capabilities, and use those capabilities as part of the investment process. The team’s long-term objective is to enable significant business growth and increased customization through technology and automation rather than proportional growth in manual processes.
Why is your role important?
As a Vice President, you will help shape the future of model portfolio management by combining software engineering, quantitative problem-solving, portfolio analytics, and technology innovation. You will contribute directly to both the investment process and the technology platform that supports it, helping the team scale a rapidly growing business while improving investment outcomes, operational resilience, and portfolio-manager productivity. This role offers a distinctive opportunity for individuals who enjoy building technology, applying data and AI to complex problems, and developing expertise across both investment and engineering disciplines.
What will you be doing?
In every role at BlackRock, you'll be expected to apply sound judgement and critical thinking to solve complex problems, adapt as the business evolves, and combine the curiosity to explore new approaches and technologies with the rigor to challenge the results. The scope of this role also includes the following responsibilities:
- Build and evolve technology and scalable processes that enable the Model Portfolio team to manage a growing and increasingly customized business without requiring proportional increases in manual portfolio management effort.
- Develop software, analytics, monitoring capabilities, and automated workflows supporting the end-to-end portfolio management lifecycle, including portfolio monitoring, customization, rebalancing, implementation, controls, and the identification of investment, implementation, and operational issues.
- Operate as both a portfolio manager and technologist, participating directly in portfolio monitoring, rebalancing, implementation, and other investment processes while translating those workflows into robust, scalable technical solutions in partnership with portfolio managers and engineering teams.
- Design tools and workflows that apply quantitative techniques and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve portfolio decision-making, automate repetitive work, reduce operational risk, and enable portfolio managers to focus on higher-value investment decisions.
- Own technical solutions from initial problem definition and prototyping through implementation, adoption, ongoing enhancement, and support.
- Collaborate across investment, engineering, strategy, infrastructure, operations, and distribution teams to deliver solutions supporting portfolio management and broader business objectives.
- Contribute to the team’s technical strategy by evaluating emerging technologies, rapidly prototyping new approaches, and helping determine which ideas should become durable production capabilities.
What are we looking for?
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong software engineering skills, including experience using Python or comparable programming languages to build reliable, reusable applications, analytical tools, application programming interfaces (APIs), data-driven solutions, or scalable automated workflows.
- Knowledge of investment management, portfolio construction, portfolio analytics, financial technology, or another quantitatively oriented domain, with strong analytical ability to work with portfolio holdings, allocations, investment data, and large datasets. Relevant financial industry experience is beneficial but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous business or investment problems into well-designed technical solutions and take them from initial definition or prototype through implementation, adoption, and ongoing improvement.
- Interest in applying artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to real investment-management workflows, with an emphasis on practical implementation, appropriate controls, and measurable business impact.
- Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders and clearly communicate complex investment and technology concepts.
- Strong interest in operating at the intersection of portfolio management and technology, with the ability and willingness to develop expertise across both investment and software engineering disciplines.
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or progress toward the designation is beneficial but not required.
