MIS Senior Database Administrator (DBA)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead the database administration and data management efforts in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The Senior DBA will play a key role in the optimization, security, and maintenance of all critical databases supporting manufacturing operations. This role requires deep technical expertise, leadership, and an ability to collaborate effectively with multiple departments to drive data-driven improvements in manufacturing processes.

General Responsibilities
Database Management and Optimization:

  • Install, configure, and upgrade database software (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server) to ensure optimal performance in a production environment.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance at a senior level, using advanced techniques for query tuning, indexing strategies, and system optimization.
  • Develop strategies to ensure scalability, performance, and high availability of databases in line with the manufacturing environment's growing needs.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as backups, performance tuning, and database optimization.

Manufacturing Systems Support:

  • Work closely with production teams to ensure the database systems are optimized for key manufacturing systems (ERP, MES, SCADA).
  • Support database functions related to manufacturing systems, including batch processing, inventory management, and quality control systems.
  • Provide solutions to improve data accessibility and integration across different manufacturing platforms.

Data Integrity and Security:

  • Ensure the security and integrity of databases by implementing appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Manage user access controls and permissions to safeguard sensitive manufacturing and operational data.
  • Architect and maintain disaster recovery and high availability (HA) solutions, ensuring the organization’s database systems can recover rapidly in the event of failure.
  • Ensure compliance with company data security policies, industry regulations, and best practices (ISO, GDPR, etc.).

Database Design and Development:

  • Collaborate with development and engineering teams to design database structures that meet the needs of manufacturing systems.
  • Analyse user requirements, and design scalable databases and data models to support high-volume transactions in manufacturing environments.
  • Develop and maintain database documentation, including data dictionaries, procedures, and database design documents.

Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot database-related issues, ensuring minimal disruption to production activities.
  • Provide ongoing support for database systems in a 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Participate in after-hours support as needed for critical production issues.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Assist in the development of data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes for manufacturing data.
  • Support the generation of real-time reporting and analytics for operations, including dashboards for production, inventory, and quality monitoring.
  • Work with the business teams to develop reporting and analytics solutions for manufacturing operations.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including IT, Engineering, Production, and Quality Assurance to ensure the availability of critical data.
  • Participate in project planning and execution, ensuring the proper alignment of database solutions with manufacturing system requirements.
  • Provide training and support to staff in relation to database systems and tools.

Disaster Recovery and High Availability:

  • Architect and maintain disaster recovery and high availability (HA) solutions, ensuring the organization’s database systems can recover rapidly in the event of failure.
  • Implement and manage replication, clustering, and failover strategies to ensure zero or minimal downtime in critical production environments.
  • Regularly test and update backup and recovery procedures to safeguard manufacturing data.

Essential Criteria:

  • A university degree and 7-10 years of experience (i.e. Bachelors’ degree) or a graduate degree and 3-5 years of experience (i.e. Masters’ degree)
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a Database Administrator, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience with manufacturing-related software systems (e.g., ERP, MES, SCADA, PLM).
  • Hands-on experience with database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or other RDBMS platforms.
  • Knowledge of data warehouse architectures and ETL processes.
  • Expertise in database performance tuning, optimization, and query optimization.
  • Expertise in database architecture, high availability, replication, clustering, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Proficiency in backup and recovery strategies, database replication, and high-availability configurations.
  • Familiarity with database security best practices, user access controls, and compliance standards.
  • Strong scripting skills (e.g., SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL, Python, Bash).
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and data flow in production environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and data integrity.


Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience with cloud-based database management (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Knowledge of data analytics and visualization tools such as Power BI
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Certifications such as Oracle DBA, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, or similar.
