This role calls for an Application/Production Support Engineer with 2–4+ years of experience supporting live transactional systems, ideally in banking, payments, or fintech. The ideal candidate is hands-on with incident triage reading logs, querying databases (SQL/PostgreSQL), and tracing requests across services in a Linux/AWS environment and can read procedural PHP to pinpoint issues. Familiarity with payments/core-banking concepts (ISO 20022) is a plus. Strong communication in English and Spanish, incident-prioritization skills, and on-call readiness are essential.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and support live transactional production systems, ensuring uptime and proper functioning across services.
- Perform initial incident triage: identify, classify, and prioritize incidents based on severity and business impact.
- Investigate incidents through log analysis (CloudWatch Logs/Insights), SQL queries against production replicas, and end-to-end request tracing (poller → ALB → app → core).
- Read procedural PHP code to locate the root cause behind an incident, without necessarily modifying it.
- Escalate incidents to development teams when code- or architecture-level intervention is required, providing clear technical context.
- Document incidents with clear, structured notes, including root cause, resolution steps, and follow-up actions.
- Create and maintain runbooks and knowledge-base articles to speed up resolution of recurring issues.
- Query and analyze data in PostgreSQL (transaction, message, and integration tables) to support investigations.
- Navigate and troubleshoot within a multi-region AWS environment (us-east-2 / us-west-2), including ECS, ALB, RDS, and basic networking components.
- Operate within a containerized (Docker) stack, including shelling into running services for diagnostics.
- Support payment/banking-specific troubleshooting involving ISO 20022 flows (pacs.008/pacs.004), reject/error codes, and general ledger (GL) concepts.
- Share on-call coverage with an existing support engineer, splitting shifts and ensuring clean, well-documented handoffs.
- Collaborate closely with development, QA, and infrastructure teams to prevent incident recurrence.
- Communicate clearly and professionally in both English and Spanish, with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Skills and Competencies
- SQL / PostgreSQL: Ability to write investigative, read-level queries against production replicas.
- AWS: Working knowledge of CloudWatch Logs/Insights, ECS, ALB/networking basics, and RDS in a multi-region setup.
- Log Analysis & Tracing: Ability to follow a payment or banking request across distributed services (poller → ALB → app → core).
- PHP (read-level): Ability to read procedural PHP to identify the code path behind an incident (no framework experience required).
- Payments / Core-Banking Domain: Familiarity with ISO 20022 flows (pacs.008/pacs.004), reject/error codes, and GL concepts, or strong aptitude to learn quickly.
- Docker / Linux CLI: Comfortable operating within a containerized environment and using shell commands for diagnostics.
- Incident Management: Strong prioritization skills, structured troubleshooting approach, and on-call readiness.
- Communication: Clear written and verbal communication in English and Spanish, including incident notes and runbooks.
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively alongside another support engineer and cross-functional development teams.
- Nice to Have: Git, Phinx migrations, prior credit union/banking industry exposure, and experience with monitoring/observability tools.
