Job Summary
The MI Business Analyst within the CIB MyMI team is responsible for the investigation, design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of Management Information (MI) and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions. The role supports timely, accurate, and meaningful reporting to enable informed business decision-making.This is achieved through strong stakeholder engagement, a deep understanding of data sources, and the application of analytical skills within the context of the core Corporate and Investment Banking business. The role requires sound financial acumen, strong Excel capability, and foundational SQL skills to interrogate data effectively.
Job Description
Key Accountabilities
Management Information (MI) and Business Intelligence
Engage with internal business and technical stakeholders to elicit, clarify, and document MI and BI requirements, ensuring alignment on objectives, priorities, and deliverables.
Interpret data to identify trends, issues and risks,
Conceptualise, design, develop, and maintain MI and BI models and reports that support business requirements.
Analyse and investigate solution options to address stakeholder requirements effectively.
Construct, execute, and maintain Structured Query Language (SQL) queries to extract data from new and existing data sources.
Support reverse engineering of existing MI and BI solutions where required.
Perform data mining, analysis, and root-cause investigation to resolve data or reporting issues as they arise.
Governance and Control
Ensure compliance with relevant internal policies, legislation, and regulatory requirements.
Adhere to Data Governance disciplines as defined by the Data Governance Organisation (DGO), including data quality management, information lifecycle management, and information security and privacy.
Conduct integrity and validation checks on all extracted data to ensure accuracy and reliability of reporting.
Ensure completeness, consistency, and accuracy of all MI outputs prior to distribution.
Relationship Building, Networking and Research
Build and maintain strong relationships across relevant business units to understand requirements and gather continuous feedback.
Collaborate with stakeholders (Business Units, Group Technology, etc.) to create and maintain a trusted portfolio of MI solutions using consistent and validated data sources.
Ensure the accuracy of information delivered, recognising the potential financial, regulatory, and reputational impact of incorrect reporting on the Absa Group.
Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of business systems, data sources, and related reporting structures.
Recommend improvements to ways of working in line with industry best practices.
Work closely with end users and project team members to define functional and usability requirements, ensuring shared understanding across teams.
Educate and support users on solution design, interpretation, and effective utilisation where required.
Continuously enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the role and proactively prepare for progression to the next level.
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Business, or a related discipline with a focus on analytics, business information management, or an equivalent NQF Level 6 qualification.
1–2 years’ relevant experience in Management Information or Business Intelligence.
Experience working within a finance environment, with a solid understanding of financial concepts.
Basic working knowledge of SQL.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Preferred Requirements
Postgraduate qualification such as MSc Statistics, MCom Informatics, or BCom Honours.
Working knowledge of BI and data tools (e.g. Business Objects, QlikSense, Data Warehousing).
Experience working across cross-functional teams and multiple jurisdictions.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong data analysis capability with the ability to derive actionable insights.
Advanced computer literacy, particularly in analytical and reporting tools (e.g. Excel, SQL, SAS).
Professional verbal and written communication skills.
Basic understanding of regulatory and industry standards within Financial Services.
Competent report-writing and presentation skills.
Strategic and lateral thinking with a holistic approach to information management.
Strong understanding of Corporate and Investment Banking products.
