AlertMedia is seeking a Contract Meteorologist - 40 Hours per week (Hours TBD) to join our growing Global Intelligence Team. You will play a critical part in making sure our customers are provided with timely and accurate information regarding major global weather events and natural disasters, as well as the impacts of such events on employee safety and business continuity.

Who you are:  

You are an entry-level meteorologist who is excited to work alongside senior meteorologists embedded within the Global Intelligence Team. You have genuine interest in filling a unique role that blends weather decision support with storytelling and journalism. Forecasting is only part of the position, with emphasis on using your expertise to determine where weather-related disruptions may be ongoing or imminent. With additional training, you’ll use various tools and open-source intelligence methods to confirm impacts before, during, and following a hazardous event. Examples of disruptions include travel cancelations, power outages, water rescues, evacuations, and emergency declarations, among others. In addition to meteorological threats, you will be called upon to cover various natural hazards that threaten business continuity and life safety including wildfires, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides, and other natural phenomena. AlertMedia’s client base is global, and so is our hazards coverage. You are passionate about communicating timely and actionable information while entrenched within a fast-paced breaking news-style workflow. You easily collaborate with your colleagues and have sound judgement with the ability to make difficult decisions under pressure.  

What you get to do every day: 

  • Use weather forecasting tools and services to identify weather events that could impact our global clients 
  • Communicate critical weather information effectively and with urgency to customers, providing initial alerts and updated information as necessary. This will include daily regional weather forecasting around the globe as well as major events such as hurricanes, wildfires, winter storms, and more 
  • Partner with Global Intelligence Analysts, helping to direct their information gathering on forecasted weather events and natural disasters 
  • Leverage social media and additional sources of information to surface and alert on impacts as a result of weather and/or natural disasters 
  • Partner with senior meteorologists to answer customer questions, prepare situation reports, etc.  

What you bring to the role:  

  • Bachelor of Science in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science  
  • Strong forecasting skills coupled with the ability to take complex scientific concepts, both weather related and beyond, and communicate them effectively   
  • Ability to multitask effectively with strong attention to detail     
  • Understanding of weather forecasting tools and systems; comfortable evaluating weather data for various international locations  
  • Ability to work under stressful situations, in a fast-paced environment with critical timelines     
  • Ability to work in a team environment and effectively communicate and collaborate with others   
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including overnight shifts and weekends 
  • The ideal candidate may not have experience covering international weather or natural hazards from a journalistic lens, but strong enthusiasm, interest in the subject matter, and willingness to work as a team will be strong differentiators  
  • This role will be a 40 hour work week (hours TBD during interview) beginning November 4 - December 31, 2024 with the potential to extend duration
  • This is a U.S. based position and will be eligible for remote work in all states except: Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana,  North Dakota, Oregon, West Virginia, U.S. territories.
