Purpose of Position:
Responsible for the monitoring of the weather and the delivery of a range of weather forecast products tailored for aviation, general public, media and marine. Prompt and timely alerting in advance for severe/hazardous weather conditions and warnings which have the potential to cause damage/disruptions for aviation, marine and public safety.
Maintain the provision of aviation meteorology in a safe, efficient, and continuous manner for air navigation in the Malta aerodrome and within Malta Air Space.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collect and monitor data from satellite images, radar, remote sensors, and weather stations.
- Provision of timely Meteorological Services to Air Navigation, Civil & Marine.
- Provision of Forecasts as requested by international standards and as required by MIA.
- To maintain up-to-date knowledge and adherence to EU legislation 2017/373, ICAO regulations, and WMO standards and procedures.
- Create Aeronautical forecasts for the local Airport Area and within the Flight Information Region on a timeline basis.
- Coding of weather reports for transmission over international networks.
- To create and update the weather forecasts for the MIA Website.
- Keeping continuous monitoring of approaching and development of weather fronts for aviation, civil and marine.
- Study the weather models for complexity and urgency of weather situation for air navigation, aerodrome and civil.
- Provide MET Services and products with the highest quality standards, based on competence, integrity, and commitment through continuous improvement in order to meet customer requirements for the provision of more clear, precise and timely MET information.
- To carry out surface meteorological observations; observe and record the parameters that make up a meteorological message; encode the observations in the standard format; transmit coded information.
- Perform and record routine and non-routine observations at fixed intervals of the weather conditions for civil and aeronautical purposes, including significant weather phenomena as defined in ICAO Annex 3.
- Track significant weather events impacting aviation, such as thunderstorms or low-visibility conditions, and notify forecasters to assist in airport operational planning
- Prompt and timely delivery of warnings / advisories for severe/ hazardous weather conditions which can potentially to cause damage/disruptions for aviation, marine and public safety.
- To issue occurrence reports when these are required.
- To apply quality assurance procedures for the provision of timely weather forecasts.
- To brief Pilots and answer other specific weather-related queries.
- Reply and address questions from the press, including recorded participation on TV and Internet.
- Assist and contribute to public events including public/school visits and educational campaigns.
- Be a point of reference for the Meteorological office team.
- To assist the Meteorological Office Manager in the daily running of the office.
Requirements
The ideal candidate:
- Shall ideally be in possession of a BIP-M compliant course (as defined in WMO Doc No. 1083) or otherwise, equivalent academic qualifications in Meteorological Forecasting from a recognised institution.
- A track record of experience working within a Meteorological Office providing aviation weather Forecasts in accordance with WMO Doc No.49: Technical Regulations, Vol. II, Part I, Section 6: Forecasts
- Must possess excellent skills in interpreting various types of data, including Weather Model outputs, Satellite images, and Radar images. This ability is crucial for understanding and predicting weather patterns accurately.
- Should be capable of working effectively under pressure, as meteorological forecasts often require timely and accurate responses.
- Should be self-motivated and capable of working with minimum supervision.
- Must be proactive in their approach to work, taking initiative and demonstrating a strong work ethic.

Skills Required
- BIP-M compliant course or equivalent academic qualification in Meteorological Forecasting
- Track record of experience in a Meteorological Office providing aviation weather forecasts per WMO/ICAO standards
- Excellent skills interpreting weather model outputs, satellite imagery and radar
- Ability to create and code aeronautical weather reports (METAR/TAF) and transmit over international networks
- Knowledge of and adherence to EU Regulation 2017/373, ICAO regulations, and WMO standards and procedures
- Capability to perform and record routine and non-routine surface meteorological observations and encode standard messages
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, with minimum supervision, and take initiative
