Metallurgist

We have an exciting opportunity for Metallurgist. The purpose of this role is to contribute to and support metallurgical processes at the processing plant, and assist in general production or specific processes such as crushing, screening, and beneficiation.

Kumba Iron Ore               

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

As Metallurgist your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment:

• Consistently apply safety and health principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for protecting oneself and others to ensure zero harm and eliminate fatalities.
• Act as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety and health for the site are paramount.
• Collect and summarise the specific risks within the working area and implement plans/systems to avoid these risks.

Performance and Delivery:

• Apply metallurgical processes and principles at operations.
• Interpret and analyse reports to assess process performance.
• Conduct metallurgical audits to ensure plant integrity aligns with metallurgical standards.
• Investigate to improve metallurgical equipment performance and identify root causes.
• Review processes regularly.
• Assist in investigating, planning, and implementing improvement projects.
• Manage small projects related to processes, technology, and equipment.
• Advise line management on production and product quality issues.
• Monitor and assess current plant process performance to identify opportunities for optimisation and improvement.
• Provide advice on operational matters and ad hoc tasks proactively, following best practices and within agreed timeframes to prevent issues and enhance skills.
• Support the supervisor and co-workers as per your competence and company policies, especially when instructed or in the absence of the responsible person, to meet functional objectives.
• Report and log events and activities punctually during your shift.
• Notify co-team members of important events.

Sustainability and Social:

• Protects Anglo American’s license to operate and reputation by embedding sustainable practices in metallurgy.
• Proactively manages the impact of any metallurgical processes on the environment and community and drives compliance with licensing and legal requirements.
• Adopts a holistic view of the geological mining environment.
• Embeds sustainable practice into all activities.

Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with all legal, environmental, occupational health and safety, and risk management standards and best practices and take remedial action where necessary.
• Compliance with all audit and other license-to-operate requirements.

This role is in Processing (PRO) department on a Band 6 (D-Lower) level reporting to the Section Manager, Plant Technical.

• National Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering /Chemical Engineering NQF6
• B Eng or B.Tech in Metallurgical/Chemical Engineering on NQF7
• Valid SA Drivers Licence

Technical Knowledge

• Understanding gained from 3-5 years of experience acquired through completing a Professional in Training Program or similar.
• Key value drivers within the discipline's value chain and interdependence of key levers.
• Understand the principles of how operational processes are categorised according to the Operating Model, focusing on Work Management.
• Fundamentals of project management.
• Knowledge of innovative technologies and their impact on operational activities within the scope of the role.
• Familiarity with business improvement tools and techniques.
• Understand business acumen and the commercial drivers of site performance.
• Basic knowledge of financial metrics and budgeting tools.
• Knowledge of risk management techniques and critical controls.
• Understand leadership tools for implementing a culture of purpose-led high-performance and change.
• Concepts and principles of the AA Organisation Model.
• Knowledge of safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
