We’re looking for a hands-on engineer to develop custom hypervisors, build customer-facing products and in-house software, and work across the boundary between hardware and software.
We operate our own servers and build software that powers both our customers’ experience and our business operations. You’ll work on virtualization, Linux systems, customer-facing applications, internal services, and the infrastructure connecting them. This is an engineering role focused on designing, building, debugging, and improving systems, not simply administering off-the-shelf tools or maintaining internal tools.
We value strong fundamentals, curiosity, and evidence of things you’ve built. Substantial personal projects, an advanced homelab, open-source contributions, and research projects are relevant experience.
What you’ll do:
• Develop and extend custom hypervisors and supporting systems software, including workload management, isolation, resource allocation, and observability.
• Build customer-facing applications and services, along with in-house platforms and tools that support our operations.
• Work directly with physical servers, processors, memory, storage, and networking, understanding how hardware choices affect software behavior.
• Debug problems across application code, operating systems, virtualization, and hardware.
• Measure and improve system performance, reliability, and resource utilization.
• Build automation for provisioning, testing, deployment, monitoring, and recovery.
• Take projects from initial design through implementation and production operation, with attention to security, usability, and the customer experience.
• Use AI development tools effectively while remaining responsible for correctness, security, and maintainability.
This is a full-time, in-person position at our Houston office.
What you bring:• Strong computer engineering fundamentals, including computer architecture, operating systems, memory management, concurrency, and networking.
• Hands-on programming experience and the ability to understand unfamiliar code, debug complex behavior, and build maintainable software.
• Practical experience with Linux and physical computer hardware.
• An understanding of virtualization and the relationship between hardware, host operating systems, hypervisors, and guest workloads.
• Evidence of building and troubleshooting real systems through work, coursework, research, or independent projects.
• Sound judgment around security, testing, and production changes.
• Clear communication, technical curiosity, and ownership of your work.
Experience we value:
You don’t need experience in every area, but relevant examples include:
• Systems programming in C, C++, or Rust.
• Hypervisor development, KVM/QEMU, kernel development, device drivers, or hardware-assisted virtualization.
• CPU scheduling, virtual memory, I/O, storage systems, or network performance.
• Embedded systems, firmware, digital logic, or other hardware/software integration projects.
• An advanced homelab involving virtualization, self-hosted services, networking, or storage.
• Building customer-facing products or internal applications with TypeScript, modern web frameworks, APIs, and relational databases.
• A degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
Skills Required
- Strong engineering fundamentals and experience building and operating real systems
- Practical experience administering physical servers and self-hosted infrastructure
- Strong Linux and networking skills, including TCP/IP, DNS, routing, VPNs, and firewalls
- Familiarity with storage, virtualization, containers, monitoring, backups, and recovery testing
- Software development and scripting skills across application and infrastructure boundaries
- Experience with TypeScript, modern web frameworks, APIs, and relational databases
- Good judgment around security, access management, sensitive information, and production changes
- Ability to turn loosely defined business needs into working technical solutions
- Clear communication, curiosity, and follow-through
- Electrical engineering experience or education involving computing, communications, hardware, or systems
- Advanced homelab or equivalent independent projects involving servers, networks, virtualization, storage, monitoring, or identity systems
- Affinity for marketing technology and lead flow
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, infrastructure automation, identity providers, or device management
