About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Mechanical Engineering Intern/Co-op

Redwood Materials is seeking an entrepreneurial Mechanical Engineering intern on our Big Machines Team during the Fall 2025 semester. This role will support the design, development, and testing of high-performance equipment—including massive kilns, rotary seals, knife gates, shredders, and complex conveyance systems—all engineered to operate reliably in extreme environments.

Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Assist in the design and modeling of mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Get hands-on experience building large, complex mechanical assemblies
  • Support testing and validation of machinery and mechanisms
  • Participate in troubleshooting and improving existing equipment and processes
  • Help prepare engineering documentation, drawings, and reports
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including controls, production, and fabrication
  • Learn and apply core engineering first principles in a fast-paced, real-world environment
  • Assist in the design and modeling of mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks

Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Strong interest in mechanical design, manufacturing, and sustainability
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and work hands-on in both office and production settings
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to approach problems analytically and apply engineering fundamentals in real-world scenarios
  • Exposure to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as ANSYS, with a basic understanding of stress, thermal, or modal analysis
  • Experience with fabrication, prototyping, or hands-on mechanical projects
  • Interest in automation, sensors, or basic electrical systems

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production environments.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed.
  • Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in alignment with company and regulatory standards.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly.

Working Conditions:

  • Split work environment between office and the production facility.
  • Work may involve extended periods of working in the production facility.
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.

The location of the internship is either in the Reno or Carson City, Nevada area (exact location is based on team placement). Interns are responsible for making their own housing and transportation arrangements. Please note that due to the location of our campuses, public transit options are limited, and the use of a personal or rented vehicle is recommended.

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
