Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high energy Principal Mechanical Engineer to deliver core mechanical engineering expertise to our AEs and internal stakeholders enabling Microsoft to design and build best-in-class cloud infrastructure worldwide.    



Responsibilities

This mechanical engineering professional will serve as a Subject Matter Expert providing key input to other organizations and internal stakeholders. This position requires a detailed understanding of datacenter HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems and mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls. Responsibilities will encompass working within a team of Mechanical SMEs (Project/Metro Based), and in addition, be the technical driver for specification and drawing development detailing all mechanical systems, and overall network topology and communication protocols required. Leading mechanical workgroups with representatives from AE firms and other key stakeholders within Microsoft. The position requires travel to sites, to “Factory Witness Testing”, vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems. 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Making design decisions related to datacenter projects including new construction, expansions, retrofits and upgrades and standards upgrades.  
  • Engaging with and managing external design consultants, running design workshops to ensure they deliver a design to meet the requirements of the Basis of Design (BOD).  
  • Collaboration with Global Technical Governance team, Global Strategy team and DC Operations teams to develop datacenter designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter until handover. 
  • Leading the delivery of mechanical system design for first-of-kind datacenter prototypes.
  • Possess exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament and a results-oriented collaborative manner. 
  • Must be a person of integrity, be methodical and detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.  



Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer Mechanical Engineering  
  • Minimum of 9 years’ experience in consulting engineering with minimum of 6 years’ experience as lead engineer , with a focus on delivering datacenter design projects
  • Experience with designing complex sequences of operations for mechanical systems for implementation in building automation systems
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to hyperscale datacenter environments 
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions  
  • Ability to analyze technical challenges, establish consensus amongst stakeholders, and drive decision-making
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including delivering technical presentations to business leaders
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain high quality standards
  • Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations  
  • Ability to prepare and present using MS Office software packages 
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally 

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of technical experience designing complex mechanical systems
  • At least 12 years of datacenter design experience in a consulting role
  • Experience with designing cooling systems for liquid-cooled IT hardware

These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
