As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll leverage your strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to process and resolve mechanical problems, design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes, and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies throughout the product life cycle. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and modifying mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations-- and you'll coordinate the procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Development

  • Lead the design, development, modification, qualification, and release of complex mechanical components, assemblies, and subsystems for plasma diagnostic sensor products.

  • Develop precision CNC-machined metal components and assemblies for operation in vacuum, semiconductor processing, and plasma-exposed environments.

  • Create engineering concepts, layouts, 3D models, detailed drawings, specifications, and supporting technical documentation.

  • Perform engineering analyses including tolerance stack-ups, thermal characterization, material assessments, and structural evaluations as required.

  • Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, material science principles, thermodynamics, and Design for Excellence methodologies to ensure robust product performance.

  • Evaluate design trade-offs across performance, reliability, manufacturability, contamination control, serviceability, and cost.

  • Drive design solutions that meet product requirements while supporting scalable manufacturing and long-term product support.

Product Development & Technical Ownership

  • Drive mechanical engineering activities throughout the full product development lifecycle, from concept generation through qualification, release, and sustaining support.

  • Define engineering requirements, design standards, development methodologies, and technical processes necessary to successfully develop and release products.

  • Own and continuously improve mechanical engineering processes associated with product design, verification, release, and lifecycle management.

  • Lead design reviews, engineering risk assessments, failure investigations, and engineering change activities.

  • Provide technical decision-making and guidance on complex engineering challenges.

Testing, Qualification & Reliability

  • Define, coordinate, and execute engineering test plans to verify product performance, reliability, and compliance with design requirements.

  • Develop qualification strategies, test methodologies, acceptance criteria, and validation plans.

  • Analyze experimental data and test results to support design decisions and product release recommendations.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues encountered during development, qualification, manufacturing, and field operation.

  • Apply structured root-cause analysis and corrective-action methodologies to drive robust engineering solutions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with systems, plasma, electrical, software, applications, manufacturing, quality, and sourcing teams to ensure successful product development and release.

  • Work with manufacturing engineering teams to support industrialization and transfer of products into production.

  • Drive supplier technical engagement including design reviews, qualification activities, manufacturing readiness assessments, and technical issue resolution.

  • Support component and supplier selection, ensuring technical, quality, cost, and supply chain requirements are met.

  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively across multidisciplinary teams and influence critical engineering decisions.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead engineering projects, major technical workstreams, or product development initiatives with minimal supervision.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in mechanical design, product development processes, and engineering best practices.

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to developing engineers.

  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, innovation, quality, and continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the advancement of engineering standards, methodologies, and organizational capability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • 7–10 years of relevant product development experience in a high-technology engineering environment.

  • Strong expertise in:

    • Mechanical design and product development

    • 3D CAD modeling and engineering documentation

    • Precision machined components and assemblies

    • GD&T and tolerance analysis

    • Manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacturability (DFM)

    • Material selection and application

    • Thermodynamics and heat transfer principles

    • Engineering testing, qualification, and validation

    • Root-cause analysis and structured problem solving

    • Design for Excellence methodologies

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 7-10 years of experience

  • Subject-matter expertise with CAD software, thermodynamics, sheet metal design, material selection, manufacturing methods, GD&T, flow analysis and/or Design for Excellence principles 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience developing products for vacuum and plasma processing environments.

  • Experience designing plasma-exposed mechanical hardware.

  • Experience developing semiconductor equipment subsystems, sensors, or precision electromechanical products.

  • Experience with vacuum system design, vacuum-compatible materials, sealing technologies, and contamination-control practices.

  • Experience performing thermal, structural, or finite element analysis (FEA).

  • Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI), manufacturing release, and product industrialization activities.

  • Experience working directly with contract manufacturers and external suppliers.

  • Familiarity with semiconductor equipment reliability, qualification, and failure-analysis methodologies.

  • Knowledge of contamination control, vacuum-compatible coatings, materials selection, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment requirements.

  • Knowledge of Applied Materials Product Development Lifecycle processes.

A successful Senior Mechanical Engineer (E4) is recognized as a technical leader who independently drives the development of robust, reliable, and manufacturable plasma diagnostic sensor solutions. They combine deep mechanical engineering expertise with strong analytical thinking and cross-functional collaboration to solve complex technical challenges and deliver innovative products that advance semiconductor process monitoring and equipment performance.

They take ownership of product outcomes, influence technical direction, mentor others, and consistently deliver high-quality engineering solutions that support business objectives and customer success.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.


For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
