The Role
General program information and/or position overview. This is where your legacy begins! The Emerging Technologies Branch of the Leidos Innovations Center is currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer Intern to work in our San Diego, California office. We are seeking a broadly trained and highly motivated engineer for advanced technology research and development programs focused on developing and testing novel materials, prototype instrument development, integration, analysis, testing, and optimizations for a range of applications. This is a highly dynamic and integrative environment in which talented and creative employees can thrive working on a diverse array of multidisciplinary projects.Primary Responsibilities.
  • Work effectively as a member of a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team consisting of biologists, chemists, mathematicians, statisticians, and engineers
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to automate laboratory processes using commercial and custom hardware in support of government-funded efforts for novel applications
  • Quickly adapt to evolving research needs, willingness to learn new techniques, and rapidly acquire new knowledge and stay informed on emerging technologies
  • Candidates should follow sound engineering practices, maintain effective documentation of activities and analyses, and be able to effectively communicate findings and reasoning with other team members
Basic Qualifications.
  • Enrolled in BS degree in a relevant area of study  and working towards a degree in Engineering, or related field at an accredited college/university.
  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance
  • Team-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with people from diverse areas and disciplines
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, willing to learn, and interested in working in a team environment
  • Great work ethic and an enthusiasm for problem-solving and innovative thinking and the ability to approach and solve technical challenges
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
Preferred Qualifications.
  • One year of technical experience (technical experience obtained through schooling can be counted towards total years of experience)
  • Experience using engineering software tools like CAD and SolidWorks
  • Prior involvement in relevant design projects (through either coursework of extracurricular activities)
  • Existing experience developing and testing materials for structural and functional applications
  • Experience testing mechanical properties of materials
  • Experience with computer modeling and simulation
  • Possess US government Security Clearance

Pay Range:Pay Range $46,800.00 - $84,600.00
