Job Description:
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer II
Location: Eden Prairie, MN
Type: Full-Time
Industry: Medical Device / Precision Manufacturing / Laser Automation
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer II to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is fluent in SolidWorks and has a strong background in machine design, specifically with industry experience using sheet metal, weldments and detailed manufacturing documentation. Prior experience designing laser processing workstations (e.g., tube cutting, welding, ablation systems) or other automation equipment is highly desirable.
You will be responsible for developing robust, precision-engineered assemblies and tooling used in medical device manufacturing, including custom part holding fixtures for components that often require micron level accuracy. This role requires mastery of SolidWorks 3D modeling and 2D drafting practices, with close attention to GD&T, weld callouts, and hardware integration such as PEM fasteners.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, and test precision mechanical components, assemblies, and sub-systems for laser processing equipment—applying sound engineering principles, simulation, and empirical validation to ensure durability, alignment stability, and manufacturability under production conditions.
- Utilize advanced SolidWorks® tools—including Weldments, Sheet Metal, and complex modeling features—to design robust machine structures and enclosures; create fully detailed manufacturing drawings using industry best practices (GD&T, revision control, and PDM integration) to ensure design intent and production accuracy.
- Generate complete design documentation, including 3D models, toleranced drawings, BOMs, and assembly work instructions; collaborate cross-functionally with supply chain and Machine Solutions teams to standardize parts and sub-assemblies across product lines post-acquisition.
- Design and develop precision tooling and custom part fixturing for secure, repeatable holding of customer components—ensuring optimal alignment, stability, and accessibility for laser cutting, welding, and ablation processes within Alpine Laser Workstations.
- Apply working knowledge of electronics integration, including wiring practices, cable routing, and low-voltage AC/DC systems, to ensure seamless interface between mechanical designs, motion control components, sensors, and laser subsystems.
- Enhance operator ergonomics and serviceability by refining enclosure features, access panels, and maintenance workflows to reduce mean time to repair (MTTR) while maintaining safety interlocks and compact system footprints.
- Collaborate directly with customers to support project management and technical aspects of workstation design—providing guidance during product planning, installation, commissioning, and operation to ensure systems meet performance and process requirements.
- Leverage SolidWorks® and EPDM® to create, manage, and store electronic drawings and models that can be viewed, printed, or directly programmed into automated manufacturing systems for CNC, sheet-metal, or assembly operations.
Required Qualifications:
- 3-5+ years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer or 5-7+ years as a CAD Drafter.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (including weldment and sheet metal tools).
- Proven experience in machine design, preferably involving laser workstations.
- Strong understanding of GD&T, mechanical tolerancing, weld callouts, and PEM hardware.
- Skilled in producing detailed technical drawings suitable for high-precision fabrication.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks PDM in a collaborative design environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience designing laser-based manufacturing systems.
- Knowledge of laser safety standards and workstation integration.
- Experience with SolidWorks Electrical for schematic design.
Ideal Candidate Traits:
- Precision-focused and detail-oriented.
- Comfortable working on mission-critical tooling with sub-thou tolerances.
- Able to thrive in fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams.
Applicable to all levels:
- Handle general office materials
- Lift up to 25 pounds
- Normal visual requirements including color vision
- Normal office environment
- Occasional work near equipment requiring safety procedures
