We are shaping the future of digital connectivity the world relies on.
The Role
Develop and evaluate a data-driven method for estimating how Radio Access Network outages affect users. Responsibilities include defining user-impact indicators, identifying neighboring cells absorbing traffic, measuring service degradation and congestion, validating methods with network simulations and realistic outage scenarios, analyzing results, and recommending improvements to outage monitoring. Machine learning may be used. The role is suited to students in engineering, mathematics, data science, or computer science with statistics and time-series knowledge.

About this opportunity:
Radio Access Networks are essential for reliable mobile connectivity. However, radio cells or sites can become unavailable due to hardware or software faults, upgrades, power failures, or transport issues.
Estimating how an outage affects end users is challenging. Some users may reconnect to neighboring cells, while others may lose service or experience reduced performance because of increased traffic and congestion in surrounding cells.
The purpose of this thesis is to develop and evaluate a data-driven method for estimating the impact of Radio Access Network outages on end users. The results may support improved incident prioritization, redundancy planning, network development, and outage monitoring. Machine learning may be used as part of the solution.
What you will do:
  • Define measurable indicators of user impact, including loss of service, reconnection to neighboring cells, and degraded performance.
  • Identify neighboring cells that absorb traffic from an affected cell using mobility statistics, handover data, and outage measurements.
  • Estimate the impact on users connected to the affected cell as well as users in neighboring cells affected by increased traffic or congestion.
  • Use a network simulator with known ground truth and realistic outage scenarios to validate the proposed method.
  • Analyse the results and suggest practical improvements to existing methods for monitoring and observing network outages.

The skills you bring:
  • Studies in Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a similar field.
  • A solid background in statistics and time-series analysis.
  • An analytical and structured approach to problem-solving.
  • An interest in data-driven methods and machine learning.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Previous knowledge of Radio Access Networks is beneficial but not required, as relevant knowledge will be introduced during the thesis.
