Job Responsibilities:

Focus area: High-Precision Embedded Low-Current Measurement for Automotive Test Equipment
This thesis offers a unique opportunity to work on a real engineering challenge within embedded electronics and precision measurement. Your work will contribute directly to the development of Magna's in-house automotive test equipment platform, used to verify and validate next-generation electronic control units (ECUs) and vehicle technologies.
As automotive electronics become increasingly sophisticated, the demands on measurement accuracy continue to grow. Magna has developed an advanced test equipment platform capable of simulating network traffic, generating bus loads, monitoring communication interfaces, and measuring electrical parameters.
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the limitations of the existing low-current measurement implementation and identify the dominant error sources affecting accuracy in the 10 μA to 100 μA range. Based on these findings, you will evaluate modern sensing technologies and architectures capable of accurately measuring currents from 10 μA up to 10 A while supporting sampling rates above 4 kHz.
 Expected outcome
Through this thesis, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Analyze an existing current measurement solution and understand its technical potential
  • Investigating factors that influence measurement accuracy in low-current applications
  • Explore and compare different current sensing technologies and measurement approaches
  • Design and simulate a potential high-precision measurement solution
  • Validate concepts through simulation, laboratory testing and prototyping
Qualifications
You are a curious and motivated student with a strong analytical mindset and an interest in solving technical challenges. You enjoy learning new technologies, taking initiative, and collaborating with others to find innovative solutions. Most importantly, you are eager to apply your academic knowledge to a real-world engineering challenge within the automotive industry.
We are looking for students who:
  • Are pursuing a Master's degree in Electronic Design, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Engineering Physics,
  • Have knowledge of analogue and mixed-signal electronics gained through coursework or projects
  • Have a basic understanding of embedded systems and measurement techniques
  • Enjoy working with both theoretical analysis and practical problem-solving
  • Are interested in precision electronics, signal conditioning, and measurement systems
  • Have strong analytical skills and a desire to learn and explore new technologies
The thesis is expected to provide practical experience in embedded systems, precision analogue electronics, signal conditioning, data acquisition systems, and automotive electronics while addressing a real industrial measurement challenge.
