About the opportunity
Carrier Aggregation (CA) enables user devices to use multiple radio carriers simultaneously, improving network efficiency and the user experience. However, these carriers may differ in bandwidth, propagation conditions, coverage, and network load. Different services also have different connectivity requirements. Cloud gaming, video conferencing, and other real-time applications depend on low latency, while other services are primarily focused on high throughput. Supporting these services efficiently requires intelligent and dynamic allocation of radio resources. Current CA solutions often rely on relatively static carrier-assignment strategies and have limited awareness of application requirements. However, the optimal carrier configuration can change over time as radio conditions, traffic load, and service requirements vary.
This Master's thesis will investigate how traffic and radio resources can be dynamically distributed across multiple carriers to improve service quality and make more efficient use of network resources. The work will build on an existing proprietary solution and focus on a mix of services, including cloud gaming, real-time communications, and best-effort mobile broadband traffic.
The direction of the thesis can be influenced by your interests, for example in algorithm design, service-aware resource allocation, optimization, or performance evaluation.
What you will do
You will investigate and develop methods for carrier selection and resource allocation in carrier-aggregated mobile networks.
Your work will include:
- Studying how different traffic types should be assigned to individual carriers or combinations of carriers.
- Investigating whether latency-sensitive and throughput-oriented traffic should share the same carriers.
- Developing methods for redistributing traffic when channel quality or network load changes.
- Comparing dynamic carrier selection with more static carrier-allocation strategies.
- Evaluating the impact of different approaches on service quality, latency, throughput, and radio-resource utilization.
- Developing and implementing algorithms in Ericsson's radio network simulation environment.
- Conducting simulation studies in realistic network scenarios.
- Analyzing and visualizing the results using MATLAB or Python.
- Summarizing your findings and presenting practical conclusions in a Master's thesis.
The work is expected to involve algorithm development and implementation in Java, together with simulation, performance analysis, and visualization.
The skills you bring
We are looking for a motivated MSc student with:
- An academic background in engineering physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- Knowledge of radio resource management and mobile communication systems.
- Proficiency in programming and algorithm development using Java or Python.
- Experience with MATLAB is beneficial.
- Knowledge of optimization and machine learning techniques.
- The ability to conduct systematic research and develop innovative solutions.
- The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
