Editor, Markets
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious, high-energy editor to oversee coverage of financial markets, an area at the core of our newsroom that intersects with the biggest economic and business storylines.
You will guide a team of expert journalists as they chronicle how Americans, from Wall Street pros to everyday traders, are investing trillions of dollars–in stock, bonds, crypto or other assets. That can involve uncovering and explaining the reasons behind wild market swings, identifying trades that are hot and those that have gone cold, and spotlighting the people who are at the center of the action.
The successful candidate will be able to shepherd daily news at a fast pace, ensuring that major developments are reported with the analytical sweep and context necessary for stories to lead our site and be splashed on our front page. At the same time, you’ll develop a pipeline of high-impact, revelatory features – from profiles of key figures to stories that take us deep inside companies that matter to our readers.
There’s a rich reservoir of material to tap into. The market is as reliant as ever on the AI boom, with little margin for error. Investors are embracing risky bets, from loosely-regulated prediction markets to exotic options. The U.S. government has intervened in the bond market to counter growing unease about inflation and runaway federal debt.
Your responsibilities will include working with reporters to brainstorm and sharpen ideas, line editing their stories and coaching them on developing sourcing that will generate impactful scoops. Enthusiasm for visual storytelling and a willingness to experiment with video, audio and emerging platforms are essential for this role.
Markets have a profound impact on people, businesses and governments; this marquee coverage is central to our report and highly visible on all our platforms. We’re looking for someone who can elevate our work so that it reaches the broadest possible audience.
You will:
Drive the Journal’s coverage of markets news, managing a team of reporters at a high level
Develop ambitious feature story ideas with reporters and collaborate with newsroom stakeholders to orchestrate their publication
Line edit stories with the help of a deputy editor
Work with reporters to cultivate sources across the investing world, including traders and fund managers
Guide reporters to contribute incisive posts for WSJ Live Markets, our widely-read platform for real-time markets coverage and analysis
Collaborate with product and tech teams to develop products that put WSJ markets coverage on the map with a wider audience
You have:
At least 10 years of experience in business journalism and command of the dynamics of financial markets
Experience as a story editor, or strong writing skills if you haven’t edited before
A desire to cultivate talent and help reporters achieve their potential
The ability to analyze data quickly and tell complicated stories in creative ways
An entrepreneurial, collegial spirit
