All applicants must submit four (4) published writing samples from newspapers, news websites or news magazines that demonstrate reporting and writing ability.
The position is based in Washington, DC and requires a daily presence in our office at 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, 6th Floor. The base salary range for this position is $120,000 - 140,000 per year.
What to Expect in This Role
- Managing a team of editors and their reporters focused on the three branches of the federal government: legislative, executive and judicial, as well as political campaigns.
- Helping determine content for CQ products, including CQ Magazine, newsletters and CQ website.
- Helping determine content for Roll Call newspaper, including setting the plan for each print edition, as well as the Roll Call website and newsletter.
- Coordinating with team leaders and assignment editors as needed to ensure the editorial vision is carried out for all journalism and content across the CQ Roll Call platforms.
- Coordinating with the Managing Editor for Legislative Policy on operations and production, including content needs for both the CQ and Roll Call websites, Roll Call newspaper and CQRC newsletters, committee markups and congressional profiles.
- Coordinating with the Managing Editor for News Production on operations and production, including content needs for both the CQ and Roll Call websites, Roll Call newspaper and CQRC newsletters.
- Providing regular and constructive feedback, coaching and mentoring to any direct reports and fellow editors and staff writers across the newsroom.
- Writing and doing second edits for other team coverage as needed.
- Editing columnists for Roll Call as needed.
- Editing newsletters as needed.
- Moderating panel discussions, webinars, and other newsroom and corporate events, including CQ Roll Call podcasts.
What Sets You Apart
- Experience working in a newsroom in an editor role
- Knowledge of CQ and RollCall systems and processes
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- 10+ years of work experience in daily journalism, preferably focused on policy and political stories about the federal government, with increasing levels of responsibility including 3+ years in management roles
