POSITION DESCRIPTION

BCI’s tax team is looking for a Manager to join its Deal Advisory group. Reporting to a Director, Tax, the role provides support on tax-related issues for investments in private equity, infrastructure and renewable resources, private credit and public markets. This position works closely with BCI’s internal deal teams, legal department, other BCI departments, other institutional investors and external tax advisors on strategic and complex transactions and issues. Team members also work on other projects such as internal reorganizations, management of tax issues for existing assets and engaging with foreign revenue authorities and governments on key issues related to BCI and its clients. BCI Tax’s focus is to ensure BCI’s clients can access preferred tax rates on investments across the globe in a manner consistent with overall goals such as investment governance and operational efficiency. Key aspects of the role include:

  • Providing tax support to deal teams for the entire M&A life cycle (diligence, structuring, modeling, and post-close asset management) for investments across several asset classes

  • Interpreting different international tax and business issues with the assistance of external advisors, internalizing advice and guiding deal teams on positions that align with BCI’s tax risk policy

  • Identifying key tax positions taken on investments and monitoring tax risks post-closing to assess costs, risks and opportunities to mitigate tax risk

  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to address structuring and operational requirements

  • Managing relationships with external advisors in different markets to assist with transactions

We will also consider applicants with experience in Enterprise Support, as this is also a key part of the tax team function, including:

  • Maintaining internal documentation of investment structure charts and updating for changes

  • Identifying and tracking key tax positions taken on investments to monitor and document for tax filings, deferred tax liabilities and other purposes

  • Collaborating with other departments to ensure tax positions of investment structures are consistent with accounting and operational practices

  • Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of global transfer pricing policies and other internal tax and operations and procedures

  • Managing tax matters associated with domestic and foreign offices, including the management of business travel, global mobility, and operations in foreign jurisdictions

  • Working with external advisors and custodians to actively manage withholding taxes associated with Public Market investments

  • Identifying and furthering technology solutions for the tax team

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6 years experience in taxation with a law firm, accounting firm and/or in industry or other relevant experience

  • A professional accounting or law designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA, JD, LL.B. or international equivalent)

  • A strategic thinker and team player who is pro-active and motivated to identify commercial solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively engage staff and external advisors to research and solve complex and challenging problems

  • The capability to manage multiple and competing priorities and to meet tight deadlines

  • Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with the tax team, the internal deal and operations teams and with external advisors

Other helpful qualifications:

  • Completion of the CICA In-depth Tax course, a Masters in Tax or other similar training

  • Experience with domestic and international private equity, infrastructure, private credit and/or real estate transactions

  • Experience with tax-exempt pension plans and/or tax-exempt government investors

  • Experience with relevant US tax law and/or tax law in other jurisdictions outside Canada

  • Applicants less experienced in these areas but with an interest in them and willingness to do additional training will be considered

An equivalent combination of education and skills will be considered. We encourage applicants to let us know how their other experience can be relevant to the role.
