This position manages and oversees the Quality Engineering team of Smile’s core product and leads technical testing to ensure the success of the core product line(s).  The Quality Engineering Manager drives the organization towards improved software quality, ensuring the appropriate implementation of processes and tools to deliver the best possible product(s) and services to Smile’s customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Quality Assurance and Engineer professionals, fostering a collaborative and results-driven environment.
  • Define and implement robust quality engineering strategies, processes, and technical standards across the software development lifecycle to support the continuous delivery of Smile Digital Health's core product and implementation projects.
  • Plan, execute, and monitor all testing phases, including test plan creation, test case development, defect tracking, and reporting. Ensure thorough test coverage and efficient execution, with a strong emphasis on technical test case design and execution.
  • Lead the adoption and expansion of test automation frameworks and tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing.
  • Monitor bugs to ensure they are appropriately triaged and resolved in a timely manner and create a culture of quality in the production teams you are part of.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of test plans on multiple projects concurrently, documenting results and leading the Quality Engineering team to identify root causes.
  • Oversee and lead complex root cause analyses of quality defects, often involving code analysis or system log review, and implement corrective and preventative actions. 
  • Provide test plans that allow clients to conduct UAT.
  • Develop strategies for continuous improvement of software and its quality, such as manual test plans, automated testing technologies, performance and load testing frameworks, etc.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure requirements are testable and the delivered solutions are coherent, consistent and complete.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as defect density, test coverage, and product readiness. Analyze data to identify trends, root causes of issues, and areas for improvement, using technical insights to inform decisions.
  • Contribute to project functions by leading standups and planning meetings, contributing to risk and hazard identification and analysis, identifying issues and working to resolve them.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of Smile’s product features and functionality to appropriately strategize testing and other QA activities.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge about industry trends and best practices to help set direction for projects and products.
  • Accountable for ensuring that all working hours are accurately reported in Netsuite on a daily or weekly basis, that the majority of (if not all) hours are tracked as billable and that the project management tool in Netsuite is properly and fully utilized.  
  • Tracking and reporting of billable hours is a critical aspect of project management and delivery to our customers and this is a major area of accountability.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years experience in software testing/quality engineering, assurance and/or software development. 4+ years of people management experience including, but not limited to, leading, managing, coaching and supervising a technical team.
  • Strong understanding of various testing types including functional, integration, system, performance, security, and API testing.
  • Demonstrated experience with reading and analyzing code in Java
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into the development workflow. 
  • In-depth knowledge of various software development lifecycles (SDLC) and experience implementing QA processes in Agile and DevOps environments.
  • Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, prioritization, organization and people management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and interact effectively with teams, stakeholders and clients.
  • Proven ability to evaluate complex challenges and roadblocks and escalating matters, as needed. 
  • Experience in electronic health records or systems integration projects is an asset.
  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree required in Health Informatics, Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field is an asset.
