THE OPPORTUNITY
BCI (British Columbia Investment Management Corporation) is a leading investment manager focused on managing investments for our clients, which include public sector pension plans, public trusts, and insurance funds. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Client and Internal Communication, the Manager, Internal Communication plays a key leadership role, working closely with the Senior Manager to develop and implement the programs and internal communication strategies that engage employees and connect them to BCI’s purpose, corporate priorities, and clients, and strengthens our reputation and employer brand.
Ensuring the successful operation and implementation of the internal communication program, the manager takes a strategic, multi-channel approach to content planning and ensures that our content and channel strategies support our employee brand narrative and our business plan.
The Manager leads a team of communication professionals with a mandate to foster awareness, connection and engagement through strategic internal communications, and leading BCI’s engagement strategies and communication initiatives with staff.
This is an 18-month fixed-term role located in our downtown Victoria, BC office.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
The Corporate & Investor Relations (CIR) department plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing BCI's relationships with its clients and stakeholders through world-class engagement and has three core functions: Client Partnerships, Strategic Communications and Corporate & Brand Communications. CIR is responsible for understanding the clients' needs and representing their interests within the organization, helping them develop investment strategies and policies, and communicating effectively with both internal and external audiences. Additionally, CIR manages BCI's media relations, government and industry partnerships, and is responsible for the company's brand and reputation management to ensure long-term success and stakeholder trust.
Overall, the CIR department is vital for ensuring stakeholder satisfaction, client retention, and the organization's long-term success, maintaining its position as a world-class, trusted and respected investment management organization.
The Strategic Communications branch deepens BCI’s relationships across its clients, internal teams, and employees through the development and implementation of broad engagement, communication, and visual brand strategies that build awareness, understanding, and knowledge of BCI’s organization and investment strategies.
WHAT YOU BRING

Post-secondary education, preferably in business, economics, marketing or communication, journalism and/or related experience
-
Eight to ten years’ experience in internal engagement / communication, preferably in the investment or financial sector and in a leadership capacity

Significant experience and working knowledge of stakeholder engagement and strategic communication principles, with a focus on internal and employee communication and engagement
-
Project management experience with a track record of managing complex, integrated communication projects
-
Experience with implementing AI/automation tools in communications is a strong asset

Demonstrated knowledge of institutional investing and finance
-
Superior skills in employee branding, brand narrative development, strategic communication, communication strategy, digital communication, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills, with proven experience in multi-media communication

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and work collaboratively with colleagues and other stakeholders

Excellent people leadership skills, with the ability to nurture and lead a high performing team and cultivate a positive and engaging team culture

A creative thinker, with a strong track record of applying innovative solutions to employee communication and engagement programs

Proficiency in using AI tools and software for content creation, analysis, and distribution (E.G., Jasper, ChatGPT, Grammarly Business, AI-powered email platforms etc.)

Strong understanding of data analytics and the ability to use data to inform communication strategies

Accreditations with the IABC or CPRS is an asset
WHAT YOU GET TO DOStrategic Communication

Supports the Senior Manager in leading the strategic evolution of a global internal communication and engagement program and the execution of internal and integrated communication strategies and campaigns that support our corporate brand, our employee value proposition, and our business strategy and ambitions

Represents internal communications in the development of our Employee Value Proposition and Employer/Employee Brand and its activation across all communication channels

Oversees a team that develops and executes integrated, multi-channel communication strategies that connect employees to BCI’s purpose and corporate/investment activities

Leads annual content planning for internal communications, in partnership with Client Communication and Corporate & Brand Communication

Advises the digital platform lead on content related matters and timing related to the editorial planning across our Internal Communications Channels

Manages team resources to meet project and communication commitments and deadlines
-
Provides weekly/monthly reports on program and content analytics, and works with the Senior Manager to incorporate this data into future planning

Works closely with CIR colleagues and business partners to ensure alignment across stakeholders

Supports the Corporate & Investor Relations team in efforts to continuously raise our profile and build our reputation with all our stakeholders, especially our employee champions

Oversees the editorial of all internal communications to ensure it reflects internal messaging and editorial standards

Helps produce internal corporate events and employee knowledge sharing events

Explores and implements AI-driven solutions to optimize content delivery and personalization across internal communication channels

Uses analytics to measure the effectiveness of communication strategies and make data-driven adjustments
Leadership
-
Plays a key leadership role on the team by managing a team of four internal communication professionals (plus a co-op/intern) and contractors (as needed)

Oversees the performance management process for direct reports that involves developing individual and team scorecards, conducting performance evaluations, developing training & development plans, and formulating career pathing programs

Upholds BCI and CIR’s values and charters, and supports the team to ensure high engagement and performance
Issues Management and Crisis Communication

Supports the Senior Manager in managing issues that impact BCI employees or that require internal communications
-
Acts as the internal lead on issues management or crisis communication, as required, and provides oversight and direction on the development and implementation of reputational management strategies, key messaging, and tactics for evolving issues, which includes but is not limited to: issue notes; backgrounders; briefing notes; intranet articles; FAQs; landing pages and other documents to support issues management

Conducts research and sources information that can be incorporated into issues management messaging and practices
Special Projects

Leads and/or supports special projects aligned to BCI’s internal communication program

Supports advocacy and thought leadership efforts within BCI’s internal communication program

Supports the continual evolution of the internal engagement program and our internal channels, including the continued evolution of our new employee intranet, as well as integration and alignment with other employee experience projects such as digital signage, employee recognition and an idea management hub

Provides strategic communication counsel to senior executives and departments
Corporate Responsibilities

Actively adheres to compliance and risk management policies and participates in BCI’s business continuity plan, and emergency/crisis communication activities

Develops and maintain strong relationships with BCI’s stakeholders

Stands in for more senior team members as and when required
WHERE YOU WILL WORK
Work from our downtown Victoria office. We are an in-person collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely 1-day a week.
SALARY RANGE
BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.
The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $124,000 - $144,000.
The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity.
We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.
