The Manager, Database Administration is responsible for all aspects of database administration globally at WEX.
About the Team & Role

Builds and maintains a mature ITIL based approach to database administration

Develops, implements, and maintains policies, procedures, protocols, and associated IT governance and security compliance activities
-
Plans IT projects, project budgets, and resource needs. Negotiates with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure technology products and services
-
Protects IT assets through disaster recovery, backup procedures, information security protocols, and change control
-
Designs and implements cloud server infrastructure, database PaaS solutions, and IaC pipelines
-
Assesses, approves, and administers all equipment, virtual hardware, and enterprise software upgrades
-
Practices in database system asset management, including maintenance of database component inventory, life cycle management, and documentation
-
Performs cost-benefit and return-on-investment analyses for proposed systems and finops analysis for existing systems
-
Manages and ensures optimal operation and capacity of all database systems (i.e., virtual servers, storage, software, etc.)

Manages technical change control to ensure that all IT changes are implemented in adherence with change control policies, and the appropriate levels of communication are taken when implementing change

Ensures policies are well-documented and communicated for and to departmental personnel

Manages, retains, provides feedback and training, and administers performance reviews and career opportunities to DBA staff as needed

Ensures systems are regularly patched and maintained to enhance data security, network access, and backup systems

Participates in the selection and staffing process by positively promoting the company and position through the interview process, objectively assessing candidates, and selecting the most qualified candidate

Ensures data security, system access, and backup systems are secure
-
Manages on-call team schedules and ensures proper 24 x 7 coverage. Is available for escalations as needed for critical incidents during on-call hours

Ability to manage a mix of individual contributor levels from junior up through principal DBAs
Experience you’ll bring
-
A minimum of 5+ years experience in administration of PostGreSQL, experience in administration of Oracle and MySQL desired but not essential
-
Requires strong technical expertise with PostGreSQL database administration
-
A minimum of 3 years experience managing Aurora RDS databases in AWS, experience with Azure desired but not required
-
A minimum of three years experience in managing or leading DBAs
-
Experience with and knowledge of terraform, automation scripting languages including bash and python
-
Experience managing people, directing team functions, and leading projects / programs to success
-
Knowledge and experience with analyzing and troubleshooting server performance metrics and capacity in AWS IaaS
-
Requires analytical ability, strong judgment, problem solving skills, and effective human relations skills to work cross functionally across the Enterprise with staff and all levels of management in various disciplines

Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways

Ability to function in a complex environment thru multi-tasking and establishing and communicating priorities

Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customers or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management, acquired company personnel and outsourced service provider

Post graduate coursework in Computer Science or Business Administration a plus

The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
