About Branch

Branch is on a mission to make insurance more accessible, so more people can be covered. We innovate using data, tech, and automation to simplify insurance from start to finish—we eliminated inaccurate quotes in favor of real prices, created a better way to bundle, and cut unnecessary costs in the traditional insurance process. Then we pass those savings along to our members. Basically, we’re doing insurance the way it was meant to be.

But we didn’t just create the insurance we’ve always wanted, we also created the company we’ve always wanted to work for. As we redefine insurance, we also want to redefine what it means to work in insurance. Find out for yourself.

Branch has a preference for candidates in Ohio, but is open to candidates located in AZ, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MO, NV, NC, OH, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, and WI. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Branch is remote first, with most Branchers choosing to work from home. Our headquarters are located in Columbus, Ohio, where we come together from time to time to build relationships and connect with each other in real life. We also have office space in Columbia and Concordia, Missouri as well as Forreston, Illinois. Once a year, the entire company gathers for “BranchFest”, a highlight of the year for many Branchers.

About the role

Branch is looking for a credentialed actuary to run the day-to-day of our pricing function. In this role you own the rate indication process, the execution of rate changes across every state and line we write, and the segmentation work that makes our pricing sharper over time. Reporting to the [Reporting Title], you will manage a team of actuarial analysts and work most closely with Product, with regular exposure to Underwriting, Finance and Accounting.

This is a hands-on role. You will be running the work, not overseeing it from a distance, and you will be doing it at a pace most carriers do not move at. A change you propose can be in a rating plan in weeks rather than quarters. That speed is the best part of the job and the biggest adjustment for anyone coming from a large carrier.

You will inherit tools, models and processes that already work, and you will be expected to take them over quickly and make them better. You operate with real autonomy day to day, make the calls on methodology and execution within established frameworks, and escalate when a decision has broader business implications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the rate indication process for home and auto, including the quarterly update and the communication that goes with it

  • Execute the annual rate plan: a review, and where warranted a rate change, for every state and every line, working to a filing calendar built and held jointly with Product

  • Deliver filings materials to the product group and own communication with them through approval

  • Research and develop new segmentation for the rating plan on a continuous basis, including model building, and bring recommendations forward with the evidence behind them

  • Maintain and improve pricing methodology and rate adequacy positions across lines of business, keeping frameworks technically sound and compliant with regulatory and internal standards

  • Establish and maintain actuarial policies, workflows, and documentation that support accuracy, compliance, and repeatability across the team

  • Identify opportunities to improve actuarial systems, tools, and workflows to increase efficiency and analytical quality

  • Support cat load and other reinsurance-adjacent analyses where they feed pricing decisions

  • Conduct financial and economic analyses that inform underwriting strategy, profitability assessments, and planning processes; deliver clear actuarial recommendations

  • Partner with Product, Underwriting, and Finance to address actuarial questions and support cross-functional decisions

  • Communicate complex actuarial findings clearly and credibly to non-technical audiences, including senior management and external stakeholders

  • Lead and develop a team of actuarial professionals, managing performance, supporting career growth, and building team capacity

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
  • Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) at minimum. FCAS is welcome and is not required.

  • Typically 6+ years of progressive actuarial experience, weighted toward what you have owned rather than how long you have been at it

  • Experience managing at least one direct report, where you carried responsibility for someone else's performance and development

  • Deep technical expertise in P&C actuarial pricing methodology, pricing trend analysis, segmentation and predictive modeling

  • Track record of taking an indication through to a filed rate change, and of improving actuarial processes, controls, or operating workflows in a growing environment

  • Proficiency in R for ad hoc analysis, and a working habit of validating your own data before you publish a number

  • Experience with an off the shelf model building platform is a plus. Branch builds in Akur8; prior Akur8 experience is not expected.

  • Exposure to catastrophe risk is a plus, not a requirement

  • Clear communicator who can present technical conclusions to senior leadership, regulators, and cross-functional partners

  • Comfortable operating with autonomy and accountability in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
