Job Description

Are you a talented and ambitious university student studying Civil / Chemical Engineering and / or Environmental Science looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have an internship opportunity for you to join OceanaGold, working at our Macraes Mine in Otago.  

This paid internship will run from mid-November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicants) working with our talented Project Engineering team on-site at Macraes. 9-day fortnight roster: 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off, 7am – 4:30pm daily.

What will you be doing?

  • Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team members
  • Participating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well-rounded knowledge of the mining process.
  • Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.

Specific project work will involve:

The key project will involve investigating chemical tailings dust suppression options to make recommendations and set up trial areas for performance. Additionally, working on a topsoil inventory study - fact checking the topsoil inventory and disturbed areas calculations, investigating unlogged topsoil stockpile areas to calculate volumes and prepare a site location plan.

Qualifications

  • Full Class 1 Drivers licence (ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred)
  • Unrestricted New Zealand working rights
  • Available from mid-November 2026 through to mid-February 2027
  • In your 2nd last or final year of role-related study
  • Ideally have somewhere to stay in Dunedin, Oamaru or surrounds, and happy to bus to site daily
  • Curious and inquisitive mindset with a passion for problem solving
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools and visualisation platforms is a plus
