The Turning Machinist is responsible for operating and setting up CNC and conventional turning machines to produce precision components as per engineering drawings and specifications. This role involves selecting appropriate tools, setting machining parameters, performing in-process inspections, and ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and productivity standards. The machinist contributes to efficient production by minimizing downtime, optimizing processes, and maintaining equipment in good working condition.
Key Responsibilities
Ø Machining Planning:
Ø Analyses work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, drawings, reference planes, surface locations, and machining parameters. Interprets Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances (GD&T) to ensure precision machining.
Ø Adhere to machine-level planning by analyzing route cards, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, and drawings. Interpret geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) to define reference planes, surface locations, and machining parameters, ensuring precision and accuracy in machining operations.
Ø CNC Programming: Creates 2D programs for mills and lathes, including defining zero/reference points, setting tool registers, applying offsets and compensation, and utilizing conditional switches. Performs calculations using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry. Validates and proves part programs.
Ø Machine Setup: Installs and adjusts 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, special fixtures, and indicating Vises for optimal machine setup.
Ø Operational Verification: Ensures correct settings by measuring positions, inspecting first-run parts and sample workpieces, and maintaining strict adherence to safety standards.
Ø Equipment Maintenance: Conducts preventive maintenance as per manufacturer guidelines, troubleshoots issues, and coordinates repairs to ensure optimal equipment uptime.
Ø Shift Handover: Maintains continuity between shifts through clear documentation and communication of work progress, issues, and follow-up actions.
Ø Documentation: Completes production and quality logs to maintain accurate records of actions taken and ensure traceability.
Ø Continuous Learning: Keeps job knowledge current by engaging in training programs and reading relevant technical publications.
Ø Goal Achievement: Contributes to organizational objectives by taking ownership of responsibilities, handling new requests, and identifying opportunities to add value.
Ø Instruments: Handling and setting of precision instruments and gauges ( Bore gauge, Height master, Groove caliper ETC.)
Ø Preparedness for setups: Need to ensure all parameters like Drawings, Tools, Gauges, and Raw Material availability are ready 2 hours before the setting.

Education & Experience:
Ø Education: ITI or Diploma (Polytechnic/NTTF/GTTC) in Mechanical Engineering, or bachelor’s degree (BE/B. Tech) in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
Ø Experience: 2–4 years of hands-on experience in the manufacturing of precision CNC-machined parts, machined castings, or forgings.
Ø Computer Skills: Exposure to Microsoft Office Suite (Preferred- Excel).
Ø Technical Proficiency: Strong operational knowledge of CNC machines; proficient in working with Fanuc, Mitsubishi, and Siemens controllers.
Ø Programming Knowledge: Ability to read and interpret NC programs and perform necessary modifications to resolve machining challenges.
Ø Process Improvement: Demonstrated experience in efficiency enhancement, process optimization, and productivity improvement initiatives.
Ø Production Expertise: Skilled in reviewing and applying technical specifications such as cutting parameters, speeds, feeds, and RPM, while maintaining accurate manufacturing documentation.
Ø Tooling Knowledge: Sound understanding of cutting tool nomenclature and its application in machining processes.

1. CNC Programming & Controller Certifications
Ø Fanuc / Mitsubishi / Haas CNC Programming & Operation
Ø NTTF / GTTC / CIPET Certified CNC Programmer
2. Process & Quality Improvement
Ø Six Sigma (Green Belt or higher), Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen
Ø ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor Certification
3. Technical Skills Enhancement
Ø GD&T (ASME Y14.5) Certification, CMM Programming
Ø CAD/CAM Software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks), Advanced MS Excel
Skills Required
- ITI or Diploma (Polytechnic/NTTF/GTTC) in Mechanical Engineering or BE/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
- 2-4 years hands-on experience manufacturing precision CNC-machined parts, castings, or forgings
- Operational knowledge of CNC machines and controllers (Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Siemens)
- Ability to create and validate 2D NC programs for mills and lathes and read/modify NC programs
- Interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Use precision instruments and gauges (bore gauge, height master, groove caliper)
- Perform preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of CNC equipment
- Familiarity with cutting parameters, tooling nomenclature, speeds, feeds, and RPM documentation
- Exposure to Microsoft Office; Excel preferred
- Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks) and CMM programming
- Experience in process improvement, productivity enhancement (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, Kaizen)
- Relevant CNC programming/controller certifications (Fanuc/Mitsubishi/Haas, NTTF/GTTC/CIPET)
- ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor, GD&T certification, or CMM programming certification
