Position Purpose/Objective:

Planning and sequencing of progressive operations for the layout and setting up of various conventional  machinery.  Plans the sequence of progressive operations by working from blueprints, sketches and other documents.  Uses blueprints or design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.  Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish jobs. Sets up machines to perform operations within its capability by positioning, aligning and securing work, utilizing and adapting existing tooling and other machining aids. Determines operations to be performed, dimensions, tolerances, cutting tools to be used to minimize required machining operations. Determines, sets and adjusts feeds, speeds, depths, stops and performs minor maintenance, as necessary. May direct and lead others.


Essential Responsibilities:

Produces machine parts by programming, assembling, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) or manual machine (Lathes, Mills, Grinders, and other specialized CNC and manual machines).

  • Interprets blueprints, work orders, engineering plans, specifications, reference planes, designs sketches and geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) for operation, material, and dimensional requirements.
  • Assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts into sub-units or complete units using operating mechanical equipment.
  • Takes measurements of material and selects appropriate machines for the process.
  • Performs machining setups and adjusts as required.
  • Conducts inspections of work produced.
  • Checks SPC charts for frequency of checks, gauging, and measurements.
  • Keeps records and maintains quality/safety standards.

Technical Skills

Demonstrates extensive knowledge of machining processes.

  • Acts as lead for department during process improvement.
  • Demonstrates expert base of process and machining knowledge.
  • Applies technical expertise in the development of complex machining processes and procedures under constantly changing conditions where initiative, ingenuity and judgments are required.
  • Develops and edits CNC programs.

Other Position Requirements:

  • Safety glasses and other safety equipment are required depending on task.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule including over forty hours a week as needed.

Pay Range

$33-42/hour

Skills Required

  • Extensive knowledge of machining processes
  • Ability to program, assemble, set up, and operate CNC and manual machines
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, engineering plans, specifications, sketches, and GD&T requirements
  • Ability to select machines, tooling, feeds, speeds, depths, and stops for machining operations
  • Ability to develop and edit CNC programs
  • Ability to inspect machined work and use gauging, measurements, and SPC charts
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including over 40 hours per week as needed
  • Ability to wear required safety glasses and other task-specific safety equipment
