Job Purpose:

The Loadmaster is responsible for overseeing the safe, legal, and efficient loading and unloading of aircraft cargo. This role ensures all cargo operations comply with policies regulatory standards, and safety procedures, while coordinating with various teams to maintain schedule integrity and protect personnel, cargo, and aircraft from damage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cleanliness of aircraft cargo compartments and promptly report any damaged, missing, or unserviceable components of the cargo system or equipment. Utilize the “Loadmaster/Loading Supervisor Ramp Checklist (21A-GS-007).
  • Conduct FOD (Foreign Object Debris) inspections in taxi and ramp areas before aircraft arrival and after cargo loading, prior to departure.
  • Ensure all cargo is properly packaged, labeled, weighed, secured, and documented in compliance with company and government regulations, including use of average baggage weights.
  • Operate and supervise aircraft cargo lading systems, directing labor crews to ensure cargo is loadedand unloaded safely, efficiently, and legally.
  • Prepare or oversee cargo weight and balance documentation. For DHL flights, rely on DHL’s approved system (SABLE), while maintaining all other Loadmaster responsibilities.
  • Act as the on-site liaison between the company customers, vendors, handlers, and government agencies to ensure safe and timely cargo operations.
  • When assigned to fly aboard the aircraft, perform all duties under the direct authority of the Pilot-inCommand.
  • Supervise all cargo-related flight activities, including inspecting Unit Load Devices (ULDs), nets, and pallets for serviceability and compliance with manufacturer standards.
  • Ensure loading configuration complied with aircraft restrictions, sequencing requirements, and load limits, using approved company manuals and procedures.
  • Verify that all ULDS and restraints systems are properly positioned and serviceable per the Company Weight and Balance Manual (WBM), and all relevant company procedures.
  • Perform complete load checks before departure, ensuring all cargo is secure, documentation is accurate, and the Dispatch Release/Weight and Balance Form reflects the actual load.
  • Confirm the location and documentation of all Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) loaded, in accordance with IATA and 49 CFR regulations. Prepare and provide the Notification to Captain (NOTOC) as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, in support of department goals and operational needs.

Requirements

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Prior experience supervising and performing aircraft cargo loading and unloading is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with weight and balance calculation, load distribution principles, and related documentation.
  • Knowledge of FAA, IATA, and 49 CFT regulations related to cargo, HAZMAT, and ramp safety.
  • Ability to identify and correct loading discrepancies, ensure cargo security, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Capable of coordinating with flight crews, ground personnel, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Comfortable using ramp checklists, load planning tools, and company documentation systems.
  • Completion of HAZMAT training or willingness to complete required certification upon hire.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to lift, move, and secure cargo, and work in a physically demanding ramp environment.
  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.

Travel:

  • Some travel will be required to assist in operational needs. Travel up to 10% of the time, including overnight weekend travel.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and passport.
