The Role

About Morning Consult:

Morning Consult is a global decision intelligence company changing how modern leaders make smarter, faster, better decisions. The company pairs its proprietary high-frequency data with rigorous analysis to better inform decisions on what people think and how they will act.

This role is a remote role that is required to work Pacific Standard Time or Mountain Standard Time to help support the Company’s dispersed workforce.

Our award-winning and modern, open concept offices are located in Washington, DC, Chicago, IL and New York, NY. All three offices are accessible by public transportation and in close proximity to great restaurants and shopping.

Join us in the office for Bagel Tuesdays, catered lunch on Wednesdays or grab a beverage from the fridge for an impromptu after-work happy hour!

The Role:

Morning Consult is looking for an entrepreneurial, business-oriented lawyer to support its Business Development (Sales) and Operations teams. The Associate Counsel will be primarily responsible for reviewing, editing and negotiating commercial contracts with customers and vendors that range from Fortune 100 conglomerates to early-stage startups.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate an entrepreneurial ethos toward issue-spotting and problem-solving, with a keen eye toward constantly improving internal processes and documentation. Specifically, the Associate Counsel will assist in the following: (i) review and negotiate a broad array of customer and vendor contracts, (ii) identify—and assist in resolving—contractual security, intellectual property, privacy, regulatory and other compliance issues and (iii) assist on ad hoc projects that come with a scaling company.

The Legal Team at Morning Consult:

The Legal team is part of the Operations division at Morning Consult. We work closely with teams across all divisions within Morning Consult to ensure that the company’s activities comply with applicable legal, regulatory and contractual obligations. Our lawyers are problem solvers, and we leverage those skills to help stakeholders achieve key strategic business objectives within the context of dynamic international and domestic compliance regimes.

What You'll Be Working On:

  • Drafting, reviewing, editing and negotiating professional services contracts, SaaS contracts and partnership agreements with a wide range of corporate and nongovernmental organizations that are often subject to quick turnaround times (between 48-72 hours)
  • Participating as a key legal advisor on major business transactions, including software and services sales
  • Anticipating and mitigating potential legal risks within the organization as they pertain to the intersection of (i) commercial contracts and (ii) security, intellectual property, privacy, regulatory compliance and other commercial issues
  • Ensuring the company conducts its business according to applicable federal and state laws and regulations
  • Fostering a workplace with the highest moral, ethical and legal standards to deliver an environment that promotes respect, innovation and creativity
  • Performing such other tasks and duties as may be required or assigned from time to time in the company’s discretion

About You and What You've Done:

  • J.D. with excellent academic credentials
  • Duly licensed to practice law, in good standing in at least one U.S. state jurisdiction and in compliance with any local restrictions that apply, including those specific to the physical location of the attorney
  • At least 2-3 years of legal practice with direct experience providing substantive contract drafting and negotiation services (ideally to SaaS companies) either in-house or at a law firm
  • Software and technology background is a major plus
  • Extremely practical and business-oriented approach to legal issues
  • Comfort working across all departments and job levels
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Ability to handle competing deadlines—and shifting priorities—with minimal supervision
  • Must exhibit intellectual curiosity and attend aggressively to details
  • Willing to take feedback, learn and grow; an ethos of continuous self-improvement

Note: We view the above section as a guide, not a checklist. Research shows that underrepresented/marginalized groups are less likely to apply for a job if they feel that they don’t meet 100% of the qualifications. We welcome diverse and non-traditional backgrounds and encourage you to apply even if you don’t satisfy every single bullet on this list! It’s expected that you’ll learn and grow throughout your time at Morning Consult, so if you’re open to building new skills, we’d love to hear from you.

The expected salary range for this position is $107,500 - $174,900, with a midpoint of $141,200.

In most cases, we target the midpoint of our salary ranges for new hire compensation. This placement is reflective of full proficiency in a role. This role is eligible for an equity grant which will be discussed in your initial recruiter conversation. Please see an overview of Morning Consult’s benefits on our Career Page.

We are committed to a work environment that is inclusive to all and free of discrimination. It is our policy to be an equal opportunity employer without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic predisposition or carrier status, veteran status, citizenship status or any other factors prohibited by law. Morning Consult will provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals.
