Job SummaryUnder supervision, this position is responsible for the day-to-day processing of incoming legal requests, including but not limited to levies, garnishments, and subpoenas. This position assists in processing all submitted legal documents, filing and cataloging paperwork, and escalates matters related to legal processing to senior staff prior to the escalation to counsel. This position is also responsible for explaining the actions (e.g. holding funds, accounts affected) taken by the Credit Union in response to court orders.

SCHEDULE

Full Time

To be effective, an individual must be able to perform each job duty successfully.

  • Reviews all incoming legal documents.
  • Processes garnishments, levies, and subpoenas, and other legal process.
  • Examines legal documents for sufficiency of information and returns unacceptable documents, noting discrepancies or reasons for rejection.
  • Answers phone calls directed toward the Legal Team, accurately answers questions from MACU teams and members who are the subject of legal process.
  • Processes payments to third parties including law firms and state agencies for garnishments and levies.
  • Ensures all requirements are met in accordance with internal and external regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists management and corporate counsel with daily functions of the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Experience

1+ year of professional experience in a progressive financial or legal setting.

Education

Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

N/A

Managerial Responsibility

No supervisory/ managerial responsibilities.

Computer/Office Equipment Skills

  • Adding machine/10-Key, Type 35+ words per minute.
  • Basic computer operating skills including windows navigation, mouse/keyboard functionality.
  • Intermediate/Advanced with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial core operating systems.

Language Skills 

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly express ideas, methodology, results and recommendations verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to document outcomes and present information in a manner appropriate for key stakeholders and all levels of the organization.
  • Must have the ability to read, understand, and carry out instructions in written and oral form.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Courtesy and good business acumen are vital, as are good communication and coordination skills.  Ability to project and maintain a professional image.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter with strong organization and time management skills and the ability to work productively and efficiently on multiple projects, having various timelines.
  • The ability to adapt quickly change as circumstances or conditions evolve.
  • Possess a desire and willingness to learn and continually update knowledge base on financial concepts, strategies, systems etc.
  • Take initiative to be a problem solver and provide suggestions to improve processes and efficiencies.
