Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal support to the Retail Division and other business units by delivering practical, solutions-oriented advice on third-party claims against bank accounts, including garnishment proceedings; deceased accounts; customer transactions; product development; account and product terms and conditions; and related operational matters;
- Provide legal support to the Wholesale Banking businesses, including Corporate and Institutional Banking and Treasury and Markets, by reviewing and advising on facility letters, security documents, related financing and transaction documents, conditions precedent and the underlying contracts supporting the relevant offer or facility letter;
- Review, draft and negotiate contracts and other legal documents for the Bank, and prepare or contribute to legal opinions on legal and regulatory issues as required by business units and support functions;
- Assist in ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, internal policies and industry best practices;
- Support the management of court cases, arbitrations and other dispute-resolution matters, including liaising with external lawyers, as necessary.
- Respond to legal queries from business units and support functions, and contribute to the development, maintenance and communication of internal templates, policies, procedures, legal know-how, legal topic presentations and training for those stakeholders and Legal colleagues;
- Partner closely with Compliance, Risk and other relevant support functions to deliver comprehensive, practical and consistent legal support across the Bank;
- Provide support to the Director, Legal & Company Secretary in company secretarial and corporate governance matters.
Core Competencies
- Qualified Ghanaian lawyer with a minimum of four (4) years’ relevant experience in banking, corporate and commercial law, corporate governance, consumer banking and/or IT and digital law, together with a working knowledge of banking and financial services laws and regulations.
- Must be a proactive self-starter, able to follow through on delivery with appropriate support.
- Ability to prioritise effectively, often against the backdrop of changing facts and stakeholder demands.
- A collaborative teammate able to flex their style to work with others, but also a self-starter who is able to work independently with an entrepreneurial drive.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Dispute resolution experience.
- Strong background in corporate and commercial law.
- Deep understanding of banking and financial markets laws and regulations.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B)
- Admission to the Ghana Bar
