Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded legal counsel who has substantial experience with upstream oil and gas activities to join the legal team in the Malaysia Business Unit (MBU). If you are selected as the Senior Legal Counsel, you will have broad exposure to the Malaysia business and will provide professional, timely, cost-effective, and commercially pragmatic legal advice on projects, operations, and other business activities of the Company.

Position Overview

Your responsibilities may include

  • Acting as a trusted adviser to the business by identifying, assessing, and helping manage legal and commercial risk
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating upstream, operational, procurement, services, and commercial agreements, including PSC-related and joint venture documentation
  • Supporting procurement and tender processes, including review of tender documents and contractual terms
  • Interfacing with PETRONAS, regulators, joint venture partners, and other external stakeholders on legal, regulatory, and governance matters
  • Providing advice and support on legal and compliance matters
  • Supporting the management of disputes, claims, and potential litigation or arbitration matters, in coordination with internal stakeholders and external counsel
  • Managing and overseeing external legal counsel, including scope, quality, and cost control of external legal services

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB (Hons) or equivalent)
  • Legally authorized to work in Malaysia on a regular full-time basis without restriction
  • Admission to the Malaysian Bar or equivalent professional qualification
  • 8–12+ years of post-qualification legal experience in oil and gas, energy, or a similarly regulated industry, gained in a reputable law firm and/or in-house role
  • Strong understanding of upstream oil and gas operations, contracts, and regulatory frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound legal and commercial judgment, balancing risk management with business objectives
  • Strong communication, analytical, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to operate effectively in a multicultural environment

HSE Roles:

  • Comply with HSE policies, Life Saving Rules, procedures, goals, and programs within the MBU HSE Management System.
  • Actively engage in and contribute to HSE communication and consultation processes.
  • Actively participate in HSE initiatives and programs that include but are not limited to, Safety Observations and HSE Trainings.
