Lead User Experience (UX) Designer

Location: Golden, CO; Indianapolis, IN; Remote

About the Role

Allegion's Global UX Services Team is seeking a Lead UX Designer to drive the design direction for Digital Order Management's Hollow Metal product team and its most significant user journeys. You'll lead end-to-end design and research, be trusted to solve our highest-stakes design problems, guide the team through ambiguity, and ensure solutions are user-centered and strategically aligned. Our designers collaborate daily with product managers, software engineers, researchers, customer success professionals, marketing, business leaders, and others to design, and deliver software solutions that create value to our customers and their businesses. This role will join a broader Research and Software Solutions team, who daily seek to scale fast, drive momentum, and delight users.

We’re looking for candidates with a growth mindset who have a proven track record of leading complex, cross-functional initiatives, driving product discovery and an evidence based vision, and cite real-world examples of how their design and research leadership led to successful product outcomes. Above all, we seek exceptional practitioners and communicators who understand that building world-class software is a team sport.

We are open to US-based remote employees, but are especially interested in candidates local to the Denver or Indianapolis metro areas. Some travel (up to 1–3 times per quarter) may be required.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the experience strategy and end-to-end design and research for all Hollow Metal efforts. Lead complex initiatives spanning multiple features, workflows, and product experiences within Hollow Metal and beyond, and make sure every decision ladders up to product objectives and business goals.
  • Craft and drive a forward-looking product vision, leveraging generative research to inform the roadmap; own a recurring opportunity backlog, surfacing scalable opportunities, validating concepts, and sharing outcomes with partners.
  • Own the measurable impact of your work: define and track design and experience KPIs that drive outcomes and inform prioritization and roadmaps.
  • Keep experiences evidence informed. Plan, run, and synthesize research across generative, formative, and summative methods (contextual inquiry, interviews, usability testing, card sorting, heuristic evaluations, etc.) and translate findings into actionable insights and prioritized recommendations.
  • Build strong partnerships and drive consensus across diverse stakeholder groups. Facilitate decision-making, promote collaboration, and partner continually with product, engineering, and delivery leadership to ensure feasibility and the highest quality experiences are delivered to our users.
  • Define, validate, and maintain the information architecture and design standards that guide your team's work.
  • Extend the design system into reusable assets and processes that raise consistency across your product team.
  • Represent UX Services on cross-functional initiatives as needed, translating stakeholder needs into a clear approach focused on solving the right problems in the right way for users.
  • Set the bar for accessibility (WCAG 2.2) and design quality across everything you lead.
  • Build a culture of innovation on your team by exploring and responsibly adopting advanced AI-assisted design practices and tools, and sharing what you learn to raise the bar for how the team works.
  • Shape team ceremonies, including weekly critiques and bimonthly cross-team demos, modeling the storytelling and design rationale others learn from.
  • Mentor designers on your team, sharpening their craft through hands-on guidance, design-quality feedback, and career development.
  • Be bold and take calculated risks.

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • 5+ years of relevant career experience in UX design, with a proven track record of leading design work across multiple features, workflows, or product experiences, in a large enterprise or mature startup environment. Relevant years of experience may be lower with higher educational qualifications.
  • Exceptional written, storytelling, and verbal communication skills; ability to align stakeholders and communicate experience strategy clearly.
  • Demonstrated strength and success in UX craft and versatility across design disciplines (interaction design, visual design, strategy, and research) as evidenced by a strong portfolio showcasing your ability to solve complex problems and measure solution impact.
  • Proven ability to define experience strategy for major product areas and establish standards other designers can apply.
  • Strong proficiency in facilitating an iterative process and creating high-quality UX artifacts including customer journey maps, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, research studies and readouts as evidenced by your portfolio. Ability to clearly tell the story of user needs, success metrics, and what the impact is to the business.
  • Strong proficiency with conducting generative, formative, and/or summative research. Strong ability in interpreting research questions, uncovering trends in data, and creating actionable insights.
  • Strong understanding of information architecture principles and WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines.
  • Strong aptitude for mentoring junior and mid-career design staff as well as collaboratively coaching cross-functional product, development, and marketing peers. Experience in fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Mastery with design patterns for web-based and native mobile (iOS and Android) B2B & B2C software applications.
  • Mastery of modern design and collaboration tools such as Figma, Mural, and Teams; experience with research tools like Maze, Optimal Workshop, and Qualtrics. Comfort integrating AI-assisted tools such as Figma Make, Claude, and GPT into design workflows.
  • Navigate ambiguity and high-stakes problems autonomously, with the organizational rigor and prioritization skills to run multiple initiatives at once without missing a beat.
