The Role
Lead end-to-end product design for patient and provider experiences in an LGBTQ+ mental healthcare platform. Conduct user research, create prototypes, design user flows, build a scalable design system, and ship polished features with product and engineering. Translate evidence-based clinical tools into intuitive experiences while setting design direction, partnering with clinicians and operational teams, and potentially mentoring designers.
Summary Generated by Built In

Allswell is building the leading mental health company for the LGBTQ+ community. Affirming, high-quality care is still hard to find and harder to afford, and we are fixing that with a specialized clinical model, technology that makes our clinicians more effective, and insurance coverage that puts real care within reach.

The clinical outcomes are strong, and the growth is fast. Since launching, we have served hundreds of clients across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, and are in-network with Medicaid and major commercial plans in all three. 79% of clients report reduced depression and 72% report reduced anxiety after 60 or more days of care.

We are expanding our services and footprint quickly, and building the team to match. Backed by leading healthcare and impact investors, we have the runway to do it right.

About the role

We're looking for a Lead Product Designer to join our small but mighty product team and design the core experiences that define Allswell for patients and providers.

Reporting directly to our CTO, this is a high-ownership, high-impact role. You’ll design the experiences that help patients get started at Allswell, stay connected to their therapists, and ultimately feel better. You’ll also work closely with clinicians to translate well-studied, evidence-based clinical tools into patient experiences that feel intuitive, engaging, and relatable.

This isn’t a “gun for hire” design role. You’ll own complex design problems end-to-end, leading our user research, building prototypes that drive quick alignment, and shipping polished features in close partnership with Allswell’s engineering and product team. This role is both strategy & execution focused: you’ll set the design direction while staying hands-on, turning ideas into thoughtful, polished product experiences.

What you'll own

  • The Allswell patient & provider experience: Make Allswell's healthcare experience feel welcoming and affirming. Productize clinical tools that work exceptionally well for this community and help people feel safe, supported, and connected at every step.

  • The Allswell design system: You'll take our lively brand and turn it into a living, breathing design system that defines what it feels like to interact with Allswell.

  • Allswell design excellence: You'll lead UX research with patients, therapists, and families, turning ambiguity into clear direction and product. You'll design all user flows and experiences—and the process for doing so—partnering closely with product, engineering, clinical ops, and growth, and working directly with engineers through delivery.

What we're looking for

  • 6+ years of product design experience shipping products and features that thousands of people actually use and love

  • A strong, diverse portfolio that demonstrates clear, decisive design instincts, from user research and prototyping through shipped product

  • Fluency with AI tools. You experiment aggressively with AI and continuously rethink what great designers should spend their time doing.

  • A research mindset and genuine energy for talking with real users

  • A clear, thoughtful, and direct communication style

What we'd love to see

  • Experience leading a design team or mentoring other designers

  • Experience designing for healthcare, clinical, or other operationally complex products

  • Experience building 0-to-1 product and operating without a playbook

  • A passion for transforming how LGBTQ+ people access affirming, insurance-covered mental health care

Why you'll like working at Allswell

  • The mission: We are building the definitive mental health company for the LGBTQ+ community, and the work changes clients' lives.

  • The scope: You'll own the core product experiences for both patients and providers, with significant ownership from day one.

  • The leverage: You'll work directly with our CTO and shape the design direction that defines how Allswell looks and feels.

  • The trajectory: A growing business with strong outcomes and fast expansion, with significant room for broader design leadership as we scale.

  • The benefits: Health, dental, and vision, plus unlimited PTO.

  • The team: A queer-led company that takes the work seriously, moves quickly, and holds a high bar.

  • Allswell is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status, and we especially welcome candidates from the communities we serve.

Skills Required

  • 6+ years of product design experience
  • Experience shipping products and features used by thousands of people
  • Strong, diverse portfolio demonstrating user research, prototyping, and shipped product design
  • Fluency with AI tools
  • Research mindset and willingness to speak with real users
  • Clear, thoughtful, and direct communication style
  • Experience leading a design team or mentoring designers
  • Experience designing healthcare, clinical, or operationally complex products
  • Experience building 0-to-1 products
  • Experience operating without a playbook
  • Passion for improving LGBTQ+ access to affirming mental healthcare
