We're looking for a Lead Editor to join our talented team of individuals who are passionate about the weather and committed to meeting audiences where they are by creating compelling and trusted content for consumers.
This role will focus on producing timely breaking weather news in conjunction with the news desk to keep consumers safe and informed. Working with engagement editors, producers, and meteorologists, this individual will identify key ways to tell compelling stories and engage The Weather Channel's audiences through data, metrics, and feedback from engagement editors.
The impact you'll make:
- Oversee all content in production, including script, article, and video approval.
- Review, edit, and refine content for clarity, accuracy, coherence, and adherence to the organization's style and tone.
- Ensure that all content meets high editorial standards and aligns with the publication's brand and voice.
- Edit and proofread content, ensuring it is free from grammatical, spelling, and other errors while meeting quality standards.
- Coordinate with Engagement Editors on story selection, treatment, and timing. Strategize on stories to hold for the next day or the weekend.
- Collaborate with content creators to develop engaging and relevant stories, features, and articles.
- Oversee the editorial calendar to ensure timely and strategic publication of content.
- Manage multiple editorial projects simultaneously, coordinating with writers, designers, video editors, meteorologists, and other stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain project timelines and schedules to ensure deadlines are met.
- Contribute to developing content strategies and editorial plans that support business objectives and audience engagement.
- Facilitate communication between editorial team members and stakeholders to ensure smooth content production.
- Conduct regular reviews and audits of content to maintain editorial integrity and quality.
- Address and resolve any issues related to content accuracy, tone, or style.
- Collaborate with the SEO lead to identify actionable SEO opportunities, especially during severe weather events such as hurricanes, while maintaining daily monitoring of TWC broadcasts for potential content.
- Provide a comprehensive handoff to the morning shift.
- Coordinate with managers about staffing needs and ensure that shifts for the following day are fully covered.
- Manage playlists and forecasts, including storm and article playlist management.
What you've accomplished:
- Over 5 years of experience managing writers, editors, and producers for publisher sites.
- More than 10 years of experience in content creation, including extensive editing expertise and creative capabilities.
- Strong ability to iterate on pitch ideas and develop related videos and articles.
- A passion for weather-from trending topics to why it matters.
- Proven ability to connect creative storytelling elements with consumer-focused writing, driven by data metrics.
- Possesses a start-up mentality: not afraid to fail fast and iterate. You thrive in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments as the digital ecosystem evolves.
