Position Purpose:

We are seeking a Lead Automation Engineer to join our Digital Production team, responsible for building and delivering high-quality digital learning experiences at scale. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, digital publishing, and instructional content delivery.

You will develop automated workflows and scripts to transform structured and semi-structured source content (including print-originated materials) into dynamic, standards-compliant digital learning packages. You will also partner closely with editorial, design, and executive stakeholders to prototype new content experiences and improve production efficiency.

This is a senior individual contributor role requiring strong technical depth, design awareness, and the ability to communicate effectively across both technical and non-technical audiences.

This role directly contributes to delivering high-quality digital learning experiences to millions of users, enabling scalable, efficient production of content that powers our platform.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Content Production & Automation
    • Design, build, and maintain scripts and tooling to generate digital learning packages at scale
    • Using repeatable, template-based approaches, transform source materials (e.g., raw content, Adobe InDesign exports, XML/JSON, manuscripts) into structured outputs
    • Produce and validate content across multiple formats, including:
    • Complex HTML/CSS interactive content
    • PDF-based resources with navigable structures
    • CMI5-compliant learning modules
    • QTI-compliant assessments and test items
    • Ensure output meets platform, accessibility, and standards compliance requirements
  • Systems & Workflow Engineering
    • Develop and optimize automated pipelines for content transformation and packaging
    • Leverage template-driven approaches with emphasis on repeatability / automation
    • Work with structured data, metadata schemas, and content models to ensure consistency and scalability
    • Identify and eliminate bottlenecks in production workflows
    • Implement validation, logging, and error-handling mechanisms to ensure reliability
  • Prototyping & Innovation
    • Rapidly prototype new content formats, layouts, and interaction models
    • Partner with editorial and design teams to bring new product ideas to life
    • Evaluate emerging standards, tools, and technologies for digital learning delivery
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Serve as a technical partner to editorial, design, and product teams
    • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders
    • Collaborate directly with executive leadership on strategic initiatives and high-visibility projects
  • Quality & Standards
    • Maintain high standards for usability, performance, and visual fidelity
    • Contribute to best practices for digital production and content engineering
    • Ensure adherence to applicable standards and design guidelines

Job Requirements/Skills and Experience:

Primary Qualifications:

  • 5–8+ years of experience in a technical role (e.g., Software Engineer, Digital Production Engineer, Content Engineer)
  • Strong scripting and programming skills (e.g., Python, JavaScript, or similar)
  • Experience working with structured data formats (XML, JSON, CSV) and transformation tools
  • Advanced proficiency in HTML and CSS, including building complex, responsive layouts
  • Experience building or maintaining automated workflows or content pipelines
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex production issues
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proven ability to operate independently in a senior individual contributor role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with eLearning standards such as CMI5, QTI, or SCORM
  • Familiarity with digital publishing workflows and tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign or similar)
  • Experience working with large-scale content platforms or CMS/LMS systems
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG)
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD workflows
  • Exposure to templating systems, content modeling, or markup transformation tools (e.g., XSLT)

Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000

*The base salary range represents the low and high end of the expected salary range for the position. The base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors such as geographic location, experience, education, and skill level.
