About Us
We own and develop the MyDyson mobile app, which is at the forefront of Dyson's IoT experience. We are proud of what we have built so far; we have more than 2 million active users worldwide and our IoT platform has over 8 million connected Dyson machines. We have huge ambition to grow this platform and as we connect more machines from more categories, the challenge is significant.
About the Role
We are looking for a Lead Android Engineer to join our mobile team at Dyson. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who combines deep technical expertise with strong ownership and influence.
You will play a key role in shaping the architecture and technical direction of our Android platform, driving engineering excellence, and leading complex initiatives across teams. You are highly collaborative, thrive in ambiguity, and take pride in building scalable, maintainable systems while enabling others to do the same.
Our Tech
Our app has a modular architecture and is built using the MVVM pattern. Our codebase is primarily Kotlin, with an ongoing effort to migrate remaining Java components.
We leverage modern Jetpack libraries to accelerate development and reduce boilerplate, including Navigation Component for UI flows and WorkManager for background tasks.
For networking and APIs, we use Retrofit, AWS IoT SDK, and Gson, alongside Dagger for dependency injection. Given the asynchronous nature of our application, we make extensive use of Kotlin coroutines to model and manage event streams.
Our testing stack includes JUnit and Mockito for unit testing, and Espresso with Kakao for UI testing. We continuously evaluate and adopt tools and frameworks that improve developer productivity and code quality.
What you’ll be doing
Own and drive complex technical initiatives across the Android platform, from ideation to delivery
Define and evolve app architecture, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability at scale
Lead by example through hands-on development of high-quality, well-tested code
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product, design, QA, cloud, and embedded engineering to deliver cohesive end-to-end experiences
Influence technical direction and standards across the mobile team through design reviews, RFCs, and best practices
Identify and resolve systemic issues, improving app stability, performance, and developer experience
Mentor and guide other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing
Evaluate and drive adoption of new tools, frameworks, and approaches to enhance engineering effectiveness
Contribute to roadmap planning by providing technical insight, trade-offs, and delivery estimates
About You
You are passionate about using technology to improve people's everyday environments
You are a strong technical leader who thrives in collaborative, Agile environments
You have 8+ years of experience building and shipping Android applications used by real customers
You have deep expertise in Kotlin and modern Android architecture, and experience designing scalable systems
You are highly proficient in asynchronous programming and concurrency (e.g., coroutines, flows)
You have strong experience with testing strategies, automation, and ensuring software quality
You have a track record of owning large features or systems end-to-end
You are comfortable driving technical decisions and influencing stakeholders across teams
You actively mentor others and contribute to raising the overall engineering bar
You balance pragmatism with engineering excellence—knowing when to optimize and when to ship
You are comfortable using AI-powered developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar) to improve productivity, applying sound engineering judgment to validate outputs

Dyson Insights
What We Do
At Dyson we are focused on solving the problems that others have ignored; solving them first using our technology and ingenuity. In order to achieve this we need to pioneer technologies that are different and authentic. This is the core of what we do and who we are. We must strive to create the future, every single day by developing new things, different things, things that go against the grain with a diverse and global team of ingenious minds. Dyson employs over 14,000 people and is present in more than 80 countries. And while we are growing fast we want Dyson to remain a start-up in spirit with the freedom of experimentation and learning, constantly reinventing our products as well as reinventing how we work, how we sell and how we support our owners. At the same time we are working through the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson Award and Dyson Institute to inspire future engineers and pioneering a new approach to engineering education. Underlining everything we do in this diverse environment is the need to always show respect, supporting each other as one team to overcome whatever challenges we encounter. We drive empowerment, development and equality in an inclusive environment for our people around the world. The future doesn’t just happen, we look to make it happen, to achieve leaps through pioneering new ideas
