Job Description:

  • Manages the clinical laboratory's operations, including direct leadership of technical associates.
  • Schedules staff and monitors workflow to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
  • Serves as a liaison with other laboratory departments and hospital services.
  • Selects, hires, trains, appraises performance, and takes corrective action for associates.
  • Investigates and resolves occurrence reports, compiling various reports and resolving issues.
  • Receives specimens, assesses priority, assures appropriate specimen identification and appropriate specimen type.
  • Coordinates implementation and validation of new analyzers, ensuring proficiency testing is assigned, tested, and submitted.
  • Monitors quality metrics and processes to meet goals, facilitating investigation, follow-up, and retraining with associates as needed.
  • Assists with resolution of unusual test orders by following up with reference lab, referring to lab leadership when appropriate.
  • Performs all levels of testing within the assigned discipline with a high level of competency, utilizing critical thinking skills to correlate and interpret data.
  • Leads and participates in laboratory performance improvement activities, promoting team building, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and safety.
  • Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste.
  • May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. Other duties as assigned.

Field of Study:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Biological, Clinical, or Medical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution; or

    • Bachelor's degree with:

      • At least 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Technology courses; or
      • At least 24 semester hours of science courses, including:
        • 6 semester hours of Chemistry
        • 6 semester hours of Biology
        • 12 additional semester hours in Chemistry, Biology, or Medical Laboratory Technology (any combination);

      and

      • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP; or
      • At least three (3) months of documented laboratory training in each specialty area in which testing is performed; or
    • Successful completion of a minimum 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course and current or previous designation as a Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or

    • Qualified and serving as high-complexity testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995, in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, with continuous service since December 28, 2024.

Pay Range:

$75,171.20 - $139,796.80

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Biological, Clinical, or Medical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Technology courses
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 chemistry hours, 6 biology hours, and 12 additional chemistry, biology, or Medical Laboratory Technology hours
  • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP
  • At least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty area in which testing is performed
  • Successful completion of a minimum 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course and current or previous designation as a Medical Laboratory Specialist or Laboratory Technician
  • Qualification and continuous service as high-complexity testing personnel in a CLIA-certified laboratory under the stated grandfathering criteria
  • At least 3 years of MLS, MT, or MLT experience in a clinical laboratory
  • Organizational, verbal interpersonal, customer relations, grammar and spelling, reading comprehension, verbal instruction, keyboarding, and computer skills
  • Additional licensure or certification requirements applicable to the specific unit or state
