Overview

The Spence School seeks an innovative, collaborative educator to serve as Director of Educational Technology. Reporting to the Director of Teaching & Learning this full-time position plays a key leadership role in shaping how technology and artificial intelligence support teaching, learning, and the day-to-day work of faculty and students.

The Director of Educational Technology partners closely with faculty, academic leadership, and Information Technology to ensure that instructional technologies are thoughtfully selected, well-integrated, and used in ways that are pedagogically sound, operationally efficient, and aligned with Spence’s mission and values. The ideal candidate brings leadership experience, classroom teaching, strong instructional design, fluency with educational technology systems, and a clear-eyed approach to emerging tools—particularly AI.


Core ResponsibilitiesInstructional Technology Leadership 
  • Partner with faculty to design and support technology-enhanced learning experiences that deepen student engagement, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
  • Promote responsible, ethical, and reflective technology use among students, including digital citizenship and AI literacy.
  • Support and advance the Middle School 1–1 laptop program and the Upper School BYOD environment.
  • Oversee scope and sequence of K-12 technology skills including AI Competencies
  • Serve as a member of the Information Technology Department and Department Heads team
  • Oversee one Technology Integrator
AI Integration & Strategic Innovation
  • Lead K-12 efforts to thoughtfully integrate artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, and assessment in developmentally appropriate, ethical, and mission-aligned ways.
  • Collaborate with department heads and academic leaders to develop discipline-specific guidance for AI use.
  • Plan and lead AI-focused workshops for faculty, students, and parents.
  • Monitor emerging AI trends and tools, evaluating their instructional value, risks, and alignment with school priorities
Faculty Partnership, Digital Literacy & Professional Learning
  • Serve as a trusted instructional partner to faculty, supporting both pedagogical innovation and the practical, administrative dimensions of teaching.
  • Guide faculty in the effective use of core platforms and workflows, including Google Workspace for Education, LMS management (course pages, grades, assessments), AI platforms.
  • Lead faculty digital literacy initiatives through professional development.
Systems Integration, Platforms & Vendor Stewardship
  • Lead the exploration, evaluation, and potential implementation of platforms such as Google Classroom, with particular attention to integration with existing systems including Blackbaud.
  • Oversee academic technology user accounts and permissions in coordination with IT workflows.
  • Steward the academic technology ecosystem to ensure coherence, sustainability, and thoughtful growth.
Community Engagement & Institutional Growth
  • Participate actively in department heads,  faculty meetings, committees, and school-wide initiatives.
  • Support student-facing innovation initiatives such as the Academic Technology Intern program.
  • Design or support community-facing events that highlight student work and thoughtful uses of technology.
  • Serve as a liaison between academic and information technology teams, translating instructional needs into scalable solutions.
QualificationsQualifications
  • Leadership experience in Educational Technology
  • Classroom teaching experience and demonstrated pedagogical skill
  • Deep understanding of instructional technology, curriculum design, and AI applications in education.
  • Experience leading faculty professional learning
  • Fluency with Google Workspace for Education; familiarity with Blackbaud or similar SIS/LMS platforms strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Cultural competency and commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, kindness, maturity, and a sense of humor.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
