Trilogy Federal is seeking a motivated Junior Data Engineer to support the design, development, and sustainment of enterprise workflow and case management applications for a federal health client. The Junior Data Engineer will work alongside senior developers, data engineers, and business analysts to build application components, structured data models, integrations, and reporting outputs that support a multi-level clinical review and approval workflow. Day-to-day work spans both application development and data engineering: implementing intake forms and role-based dashboards, designing and maintaining the underlying data structures that drive routing and threshold logic, building and validating data pipelines, and producing reporting views and executive summary outputs used by leadership. This is a hands-on, growth-oriented role for an early-career engineer who is comfortable working from user stories and acceptance criteria, asking clarifying questions, and delivering incremental work in an Agile environment. The ideal candidate is a fast learner with strong fundamentals in Python and SQL who is eager to pick up low-code platforms and federal delivery practices under the mentorship of senior technical staff.

Please note, this position is remote, but may require occasional ad hoc travel to client locations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, configure, and maintain application components including intake forms, role-based dashboards, workflow routing, notifications, and audit logging, under the direction of senior developers.
  • Design, build, and maintain relational and list-based data structures that support workflow routing, threshold logic, versioning, and historical reporting.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines to ingest, validate, transform, and load data from Excel, CSV, form submissions, and upstream enterprise systems into the application data layer.
  • Write, optimize, and troubleshoot SQL queries and stored logic supporting application functionality, reporting, and data quality checks.
  • Develop and support REST API integrations and structured data exchanges (JSON) between the application and other enterprise systems and services.
  • Build reporting views, dashboards, and automated document or summary outputs that present request status, service level agreement (SLA) compliance, and enterprise performance metrics to client stakeholders.
  • Translate business epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria into working functionality, and participate in backlog refinement, estimation, sprint planning, and daily stand-ups.
  • Perform data validation, create and maintain test data, support unit and regression testing, and assist with defect triage and resolution.
  • Use Git-based version control and participate in peer code reviews, branching and merge practices, and supported deployment and release activities across development, test, and production environments.
  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation, including data dictionaries, schema and configuration documentation, and runbooks that support onboarding, handoff, and future feature integration.
  • Support compliance with federal security, privacy, records management, and Section 508 accessibility requirements in all delivered work.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, product owners, testers, and client subject matter experts to clarify requirements and confirm that delivered functionality meets user needs.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and blockers proactively to the technical lead and project manager.
  • Stay current with relevant development, data engineering, and platform capabilities to ensure delivered solutions remain maintainable and relevant.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, software engineering, or similar.
  • 3+ years of experience in software development, data engineering, or a closely related technical role. Internship, co-op, research, and substantive academic or personal project experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Proficiency in SQL, including working knowledge of relational database design and data modeling.
  • Experience building or consuming REST APIs and working with structured data formats such as JSON.
  • Experience with Git-based version control and collaborative development workflows.
  • Ability to read and work from written requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to learn new platforms and tools quickly, including low-code development environments.
  • Capacity to work independently or collaboratively with a cross-functional team in a remote or hybrid setting.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • VA or federal health IT experience preferred.
  • Advanced degree in computer science, data science, or similar.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse) and SharePoint Online.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or a comparable relational database, including schema design and migrations.
  • Experience with TypeScript or JavaScript and a modern front-end framework such as React.
  • Experience building dashboards or visualizations in Power BI, Grafana, or a similar tool.
  • Familiarity with containerization and CI/CD tooling such as Docker and GitHub Actions.
  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum delivery teams, including sprint-based delivery and code review.
  • Familiarity with data quality, validation, audit logging, and version control concepts in a regulated or compliance-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and requests.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
