Joint Use Specialist
Position Overview
The Joint Use Specialist is responsible for coordinating and managing the joint use process related to electric utility infrastructure. This role supports power and broadband infrastructure projects by working closely with electric utilities, municipalities, engineering teams, and contractors to ensure proper pole attachment approvals, compliance with utility standards, and efficient project execution. The Joint Use Specialist will oversee pole attachment applications, track make-ready activities, and ensure all work aligns with utility and regulatory requirements. Depending on skillset, specialists may assist with electric distribution designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the joint use process for projects involving electric utility poles and power infrastructure.
- Prepare, submit, and track pole attachment applications with electric utilities and pole owners.
- Coordinate with internal engineering teams and external utility representatives to review pole loading and attachment requirements.
- Monitor application progress, approvals, and make-ready timelines to keep projects on schedule.
- Maintain detailed records of pole attachment applications, approvals, and construction activities.
- Identify potential conflicts related to pole capacity, clearances, or utility standards and assist in resolving issues.
- Support project managers by providing updates on joint use status and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including utility safety and clearance standards.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of electric distribution systems and utility pole attachment standards.
- Familiarity with joint use agreements, make-ready processes, and utility coordination procedures.
- Strong organizational and project tracking skills.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills when working with utilities and engineering teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project management tools.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with electric cooperatives, investor-owned utilities, or municipal utilities.
- Experience designing electric distribution facilities for a utility company.
- Familiarity with pole loading analysis and clearance requirements such as NESC (National Electrical Safety Code).
- Experience supporting fiber deployment projects attached to power utility infrastructure.
- Knowledge of utility permitting and regulatory processes.
Work Environment
This role may be performed remotely or in a hybrid setting depending on project needs. Occasional travel may be required for coordination meetings with utilities, field verification, or project site visits.
