What does a successful Java Technical Manager do at Fiserv?
A successful Java Technical Manager at Fiserv leads engineering teams in building secure, scalable and reliable applications that support critical business and client needs. This role provides technical leadership across the software development lifecycle while managing delivery, team performance and engineering quality. The Java Technical Manager partners with stakeholders across product, architecture, infrastructure and operations to drive outcomes that are practical, efficient and aligned with business goals.
What you will do:
- Lead a team of software engineers responsible for designing, developing and supporting Java-based applications
- Manage day-to-day technical delivery across projects, enhancements and production support activities
- Drive architecture and design decisions for enterprise-grade applications, APIs and integrated systems
- Provide hands-on technical guidance in Java, Spring Boot, microservices and distributed systems
- Ensure adherence to coding standards, security requirements, performance expectations and quality practices
- Partner with product managers, business analysts, architects and cross-functional teams to define and deliver solutions
- Oversee sprint planning, resource allocation, estimation, dependency management and release readiness
- Support modernization initiatives including cloud adoption, containerization and automation
- Review technical designs, conduct code reviews and remove delivery roadblocks for the team
- Monitor application stability and support issue resolution, root cause analysis and preventive improvements
- Mentor team members, support career development and contribute to hiring and performance management
- Communicate delivery progress, technical risks and mitigation plans to leadership and stakeholders
What you will need to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering or related discipline, or equivalent work experience
- 8+ years of experience in software development with strong Java expertise
- 3+ years of experience in technical leadership, team lead or engineering management roles
- Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring, Spring Boot and RESTful services
- Experience designing and building scalable, high-availability enterprise applications
- Experience with microservices architecture, APIs and system integration patterns
- Experience with SQL and database technologies such as Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL or NoSQL platforms
- Experience with CI/CD tools, Git-based source control and automated testing frameworks
- Knowledge of secure coding practices, application performance tuning and production support
- Experience working in agile development environments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work across technical and business teams
What would be great to have:
- Experience in financial services, banking, payments or fintech
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and cloud platforms
- Experience with Kafka, messaging systems or event-driven architecture
- Experience with DevSecOps practices and observability tools
- Exposure to modern UI frameworks or full-stack application delivery
- Experience leading globally distributed teams
