Job Description

We’re looking for a Japan Investment Compliance Lead to accelerate our expansion plans in Japan. This is an unique and exciting pioneering opportunity to grow Wise in the region, allowing millions more potential customers to save money by using our services.

This is not your typical Compliance role. You are responsible for registering us as a Type 1 Financial Instruments Business and helping with the overall expansion in Japan together with the banking & expansion team. You will have full responsibility for managing critical relationships with government departments and regulators. Through your work, you will have the ability to directly influence our Asset product capabilities in Japan. Based in Tokyo you will work with a global team of multidisciplinary specialists (Product, Treasury, Banking, Security) to help build world class products for Japan. You’ll also manage and strengthen the teams’ relationships with regulators by being the Regulator’s first point of contact, keeping everybody informed and protecting our most valuable asset - our customers.

Your mission:

  • For a Type 1 Financial Instruments license registration, you will manage the licensing process end-to-end: from preparing necessary documents, preparing internal policies to setting up the sufficient internal structure/governance to the product execution. This will include:

    • Type 1 Financial Instruments Business Licence: registration under a Japan Asset entity (to be newly established)

    • Financial Instruments Intermediary Service Provider Licence

    • Registration to be a member of Japan Securities Dealers Association

  • Work with the global Assets product team for product launches, potential product changes and new features in the market that would have the biggest impact for our customers. You will be one of the Asset product team’s go-to people for regulatory knowledge, and will lead the early stages of setting the team up with the new Assets product features.

  • Together with the banking team, understand existing and new regulations, figuring out the best way in which our product and setup are compliant with them. We see regulation as an opportunity, and we want you to help us achieve that vision!

  • Build trust with our regulator: manage and coordinate meaningful reporting internally and externally, respond to information requests, and proactively communicate product changes and notifiable events.

  • Keep up to date with regulatory change and provide input to government policy departments on the impact of proposed changes in regulation.

This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of Wise’s business and get to know many teams across the company as you liaise with them to help them interpret the regulatory framework and prepare the information that our regulators need.

  • Help keep compliance right at the heart of our product developments and new initiatives by horizon-scanning for new regulatory developments and sharing these with the teams.

Qualifications

A bit about you:

  • If you have a background in payments or other financial regulation, great communication and organisational skills, tons of motivation, then this role could be perfect for you!
  • Must be a Japanese native speaker residing in Japan and fluent in English.
  • Experience in Type 1 Financial Instruments Business licence business for at least 2-4 years to have a deep understanding of the Financial Instruments Business regulation, governance requirements and dynamics.
  • Experience in regulation, licensing or payments in a fast paced professional environment.
  • If you have experience in fund transfer service provider business, it would be a plus but if not, you are willing to learn about fund transfer service provider business.
  • Able to get stuff done independently. Not afraid to get your hands dirty to deliver what is needed. Bonus points if you have completed a licence application or regulatory compliance experience in a highly regulated industry in the past.
  • Able to understand financial and securities regulations in a changing regulatory environment An analytical and critical thinker.
  • Able to understand regulations across various jurisdictions, and make pragmatic, risk-based decisions on how these need to be implemented
  • Happy to work independently and thoroughly
  • Passionate about transforming the financial industry for good
  • You are willing to travel to our global offices as needed

What We Do

We’re making a positive, irreversible change in the world of finance. Together.

People on every continent around the world are choosing Wise to help them live, travel and work internationally. We’re the fairest, easiest way to send money overseas.

Built by and for people who live global lives, we make sending money abroad up to 8 times cheaper than the bank. This is money without borders - instant, convenient, transparent and eventually free.

For our customers, using Wise is as simple as sending money from A to B, but behind our app and website is a complex engine of currencies and routes, that’s being designed, built and powered by our talented teams in cities around the world.

We’re just at the beginning of our story and we’re growing at an incredible pace. We won’t stop until anyone, anywhere can send, spend and receive money wherever they are, whatever they’re doing. There’s still heaps to do and we can’t do it alone.

Why Work With Us

We are a mission-driven company, looking to change banking for the better. Current banking systems don’t let us send, spend or receive money across borders easily. Or quickly. Or cheaply. So, we’re building a new one. If you're looking for an autonomous work environment, where you'll face cool challenges, learn and grow, you'll like working at Wise
