Summary

The Systems Tech is primarily responsible for the day-to-day administration of Microsoft O365 and Active Directory and serves as the lead technician for the Active Directory forest/domain. Reporting to the IT Director, this role collaborates frequently with other IT staff to ensure that all IT systems are optimized to serve the needs of a large medical practice with multiple disparate locations. The individual in this role is expected to perform hardware installation at the Server level, troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, and develop informed suggestions and solutions to the IT Director and other team members.


Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibility but will assist with orientation and training of other practice employees.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Primarily responsible for the day-to-day administration of Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Entra ID.
  • Create, configure, and maintain Exchange Online mailboxes, distribution groups, and AD integrations.
  • Respond to Helpdesk tickets and calls supporting company computer software and hardware operations, including printing, installation, word processing, e-mail, operating systems, and area network on-site or remotely.
  • Serve as the primary administrator for the Microsoft Active Directory forest/domain, partnering with the IT Engineering team on complex infrastructure projects and architectural changes.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization environments.
  • Support Windows Server 2012R2/2019/2022/2025 and Windows 11 in a hybrid Active Directory environment.
  • Coordinate with key vendors and help administer our shared AD direct trusts in an AWS environment.
  • Perform hardware installations at the Server level, making sure to install, setup, configure and decommission physical and virtual servers appropriately to meet company needs.
  • Manage the hardware and software lifecycles of physical and virtual servers.
  • Effectively troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, including desktop and application issues on Windows 11.
  • Perform root cause analysis of critical outages and incidents, recommend corrective actions, and coordinate with IT Engineering to implement long-term solutions.
  • Collaborate with the IT Engineering team to identify process improvements and participate in implementation projects involving Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and related infrastructure systems.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Active Directory technologies and provide recommendations to improve operational efficiency, security, and user experience.
  • Maintain systems documentation and guides, including SOPs and System Architecture Guides and Diagrams, and ensure they adhere to organizational policies and standards.
  • Ensure all engineered solutions are in compliance with corporate and HIPAA guidelines and are designed to maintain highest availability and system dependability.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, configuration, and optimization of IT systems in partnership with the IT Engineering team.
  • Ensure that all changes to production systems follow established Change Management process.
  • Schedule and implement changes and updates to systems at times and in ways that minimize disruption of clinic operations.
  • Administer and maintain Group Policy, workstation management standards, software deployment, and security policies across Windows endpoints.
  • Participate in workstation lifecycle management including imaging, deployment, hardware replacement, operating system upgrades, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Utilize PowerShell and other administrative tools to automate routine tasks, generate reports, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate with software vendors and internal stakeholders to support business and clinical applications and their underlying infrastructure dependencies.

QualificationsEducation and/or Experience; Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations (Minimum Requirements)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in IT systems engineering and administration.
  • Experience evaluating and recommending technical solutions to meet business needs.
  • 2+ years of industry experience with Microsoft products.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the successful performance of the essential job duties.

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy for hybrid connectivity between O365, Azure, and on-premises domain controllers and clients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the roles and features, as well as improvements in Microsoft Exchange/O365 including mail flow, archiving, managed availability, administration via GUI and shell environments, and integration with other Microsoft products.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of connecting end users to Exchange via Outlook for both PC, web-based configurations, and mobile devices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide excellent internal customer service and explain complex technical concepts in straightforward terms.
  • High level of self-accountability, with the ability to work independently to meet deadlines and quickly adapt to changing needs.
  • Collaborative workstyle and desire to share knowledge to build best practices and a high-functioning team.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to approach problems with creativity, flexibility, and curiosity.
  • Possession of a current and valid driver’s license in the state of residence and the ability to travel locally by car.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including evenings, weekends, and, occasionally, extended hours to ensure updates and changes do not impact clinic operations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Advanced detailed knowledge in AD architecture and infrastructure (LDAP, Directory Replication, group policy, security, schema changes, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of DNS, DHCP, Kerberos and Windows Authentication.
  • Experience with scripting / programming languages and use of PowerShell.
  • Understanding archiving, eDiscovery, auditing, and mobile device management.
  • Experience with backup / Recovery for Exchange and exposure to SharePoint, OneDrive for Business and Teams.
  • Current Windows Server certifications (i.e. MCSA or MCSE certification).

Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • Majority of work is performed in a general office environment. Exposure to moderate levels of noise in a well-lit, well-ventilated and moderately paced environment.
  • Occasionally required to lift, push, pull, or carry objects and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • This position requires manual/finger dexterity as necessary to perform daily job duties.
  • Occasionally required to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to sit for extended periods of time.
