What success looks like in this role:
Role Summary
Responsible for maintaining, executing, and improving IT disaster recovery plans, coordinating DR testing, and acting as a key liaison between IT teams, business stakeholders, and senior DR leadership.
1. Disaster Recovery Planning
- Maintain and update IT disaster recovery plans
- Ensure plans reflect:
- Current infrastructure and applications
- Cloud, on‑prem, and hybrid environments
- Validate plan accuracy through regular reviews
- Maintain and track:
- System‑level RTO and RPO
- Identify gaps between recovery targets and technical capability
- Escalate risks and misalignments to senior leadership
2. IT & Technical Knowledge (Infrastructure & Platform Understanding)
- Solid working knowledge of:
- Servers, virtualization, storage, and networking basics
- Cloud DR concepts (replication, snapshots, failover)
- Understand how:
- Applications depend on databases, identity, and networks
- Can explain recovery steps and sequencing clearly to technical teams.
Backup & Restore Processes
- Understand backup and recovery solutions:
- Backup schedules, retention, restore validation
- Coordinate restore testing with infrastructure teams
- Track backup success and recovery risks
3. DR Testing & Exercising (Test Planning & Execution)
- Plan and coordinate:
- Application DR tests
- Infrastructure recovery tests
- Create test scenarios aligned to real‑world failures
- Coordinate across:
- Server, network, database, application, security teams
Test Reporting & Follow‑Up
- Capture test results:
- Actual recovery times vs RTO
- Issues and lessons learned
- Track remediation actions to closure
- Track recovery progress, blockers, and dependencies
- Maintain accurate timelines during incidents
- Provide summary reports to senior DR leadership
Communication & Coordination
- Prepare and deliver:
- Clear, timely stakeholder updates
- Status reports for IT and business teams
- Maintain incident logs and documentation
- Communicate confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
4. Governance, Risk & Compliance (Documentation & Audit Readiness)
- Maintain DR documentation for:
- Audits and compliance reviews
- Support audits:
- Provide evidence
- Walk through DR plans and test results
- Track audit findings and remediation actions
- Audit‑aware and detail‑oriented.
Risk Tracking
- Identify DR gaps and risks:
- Inadequate testing
- Missing dependencies
- Unrealistic recovery targets
- Log and track risks until resolution or formal acceptance
- Proactively flags risks instead of reacting to audit findings.
5. Program & Organizational Skills
Planning & Coordination
- Manage DR calendars:
- Testing schedules
- Plan reviews
- Coordinate with:
- IT, Security, Applications, Infrastructure, Vendors
- Track deliverables and deadlines
Tools & Reporting
- Use tools such as:
- ServiceNow
- BCM Modules
- Maintain accurate trackers, dashboards, and reports
