Job Description:

The opportunity

The design of high voltage (HV) devices, such as gas circuit breakers (CB), requires – among others – the prediction of the dielectric withstand as well as switching performance. The R&D activities in the area of gas circuit breakers are enhanced by various computer-aided-engineering tools and IT technologies. The aim of the internship is to carry out 2D and 3D CFD simulations, perform experimental data post-processing and analysis using in-house tools in order to improve the accuracy of the simulations. The superior goal is the achievement of high-end quality and performance of the final product. Apart from that, a partial focus will be also on thermal-fluid-dynamic simulations to evaluate the performances of a GCB during operation under steady state and transient electrical loads. The simulations will be carried out with the software Ansys Maxwell and Fluent.

The candidate will receive dedicated assistance and support from the Hitachi Energy engineers and scientists. Optional is the planning/design of validation experimental tests in collaboration with the Hitachi Energy Technology Center Team and Hitachi Energy Corporate Research Center.

How you’ll make an impact

  • 2D and 3D CFD simulations

  • Thermo-fluid-dynamic simulation to assess performances of a GCB by means of the software Ansys Maxwell and Fluent

  • Data post-processing, analysis and evaluation of the results

  • Propose improvements to the simulated case in collaboration with the Hitachi Energy team

  • Documentation of the simulation and analysis results

Your background

  • Student in the field of mechanical (electrical) engineering or physics

  • Background in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and thermal management

  • CAD knowledge

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

  • Ability to work in a team, as well as willingness to handle responsibilities independently

  • Knowledge in Ansys, Python and Matlab is an advantage
