Job Description

The Indiana University Foundation is seeking a thoughtful, strategic, and highly collaborative Internal Communications Strategist to help strengthen internal communications across the Foundation and broader IU advancement community. 

This role is ideal for a skilled communicator who can bring clarity to complexity, build trusted relationships across teams, and translate organizational priorities into clear, engaging messages that inform, align, and inspire action. The Internal Communications Strategist will serve as a key connector across departments, partnering with senior leaders, unit leaders, and stakeholders to design and execute internal communications strategies that support giving and engagement goals. 

In this role, you will help elevate internal communications from reactive to proactive by creating structure, developing communications plans, and supporting key organizational initiatives. You will play an important role in helping employees understand priorities, navigate change, and stay connected to the Foundation’s mission and impact. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Developing and executing internal communications strategies that build shared understanding, strengthen collaboration, and support organizational goals.  
  • Managing key stakeholder relationships and creating annual and project-based communications plans with clear objectives and measurable outcomes. 
  • Partnering with members of the Senior Management Team, unit leaders, and internal stakeholders to translate leadership decisions into clear, actionable messaging. 
  • Creating and reviewing communications materials, including internal emails, intranet posts, newsletters, leadership talking points, presentation decks, briefings, announcements, and key messages.  
  • Supporting communications for major organizational initiatives, employee engagement efforts, change management priorities, and timely announcements. 
  • Building narratives and proof points that communicate the impact, benefits, and priorities of Foundation initiatives. 
  • Identifying opportunities to improve communications workflows, internal processes, and systems that help the team manage increasing complexity. 
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the Marketing and Communications Department and throughout the organization to deliver thoughtful, effective communications.  

Qualifications

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills across a variety of channels, audiences, and formats. 
  • Strong copyediting, proofreading, fact-checking, and messaging skills. 
  • Ability to develop strategic communications plans that align with organizational priorities and deliver measurable results. 
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with care.  
  • Collaborative working style with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing competing deadlines. 
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality and timeliness. 
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, summarize, and present information effectively. 
  • Adaptability, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to address complex or difficult situations with professionalism. 
  • Familiarity with content management systems, communications tools, Microsoft Office, and style guidelines such as AP or Chicago. 
  • Experience with electronic project management tools is strongly preferred. 

Education and experience: 

Bachelor’s degree required. 

Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in communications, internal communications, strategic communications, public relations, marketing communications, or a related field.
