Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Education Manager and Instructor, the Instructional Assistant will assist with the academic, social, and cultural development of the students of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians. This position will aid working with students to develop their academic skills necessary to successfully complete grades K through 12. The Assistant will provide supervision and assistance to students during academic, remedial, and cultural enrichment activities. The Instructional Assistant will aid in serving as an advocate between schools, essential organizations, the parents/guardians, and the youth.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Educational duties:

1. Assist students with homework and classroom assignments.

2. Assist the Instructor in carrying out IPP objectives.

3. Provide supervision of student conduct to ensure a proper learning atmosphere is maintained.

4. Assist students with development of computer skills.

5. Assist in maintaining a clean, uncluttered work area.

  1. Perform routine organization and maintenance of library books and program/activity materials.
  2. Check in/out books using library management system.
  3. Provide library assistance to students.

 

Recreational duties:

  1. Perform routine organization of programs and activities.
  2. Compilation of data relating to field trips, programs, and events.
  3. Assists in conducting field trips and assigned programs.
  4. General maintenance of parks and facilities.

 

General duties:

  1. Supervise participants to ensure compliance with rules.
  2. Obtain and reproduce copies of registration materials and parental permission forms.
  3. Statistical research on attendance, accidents, incidents, and surveys.
  4. Coordinate department activities and services with other departments, as appropriate.
  5. Research and maintain records of a variety of educational activities.
  6. Assist with activities designed to increase self-esteem and cultural knowledge.
  7. Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  1. Possess High School Diploma or GED.
  2. 2 years of experience in the education field or related experience working with youth.
  3. Basic Math and English composition skills required.
  4. Knowledge of methods of organizing a variety of recreational programs.
  5. Knowledge of principles and practices of public/community relations.
  6. Ability to enforce compliance with safety codes, rules and regulations in all department programs and activities.
  7. Ability to gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.
  8. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  9. Must be reliable and able to work flexible hours, including evenings and some weekends.
  10. Must have basic computer skills including Internet and word processing.
  11. Must be able to tutor in wide variety of subjects (pre-employment test may be given).
  12. Must be willing to attend training.
  13. Possess a valid California Driver License and comply with the requirements of the Tribes driving policy and insurance requirements.

Physical Requirements:

 

This position is deemed a level 2 and requires walking, standing, and sitting for prolonged periods of time; climbing stairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching; pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 30 pounds; raising objects overhead, manual dexterity for operation of computer, phones and small office machines; hearing, talking and good verbal and written communication skills, repetitive motions of the wrist, hands and fingers.

 

Indian Preference:

Preference in filling vacancies shall be given first to qualified Tuolumne Me-Wuk Community Council Members and then to enrolled Native Americans of any federally recognized tribe.

Documentation for claiming preference must be provided with the application for consideration.

Pre-employment Requirements:

 

Employment is contingent on pre-employment background and drug test results. Additional testing will be given during the application process to confirm basic math and English composition skills competency.
