The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain production and facility equipment according to safety, predictive, and productive maintenance systems and processes. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of all manufacturing equipment, machinery, and building systems within the facility.
Working within a fast-paced industrial environment, the Maintenance Mechanic applies mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic knowledge to minimize downtime and maximize equipment reliability. The incumbent is expected to work collaboratively with production teams, engineers, and other maintenance personnel to meet plant operational goals and uphold the highest standards of quality and safety.
2. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are considered essential to this position. Other duties may be assigned as business needs require.
2.1 Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) activities on all production machinery, conveyors, presses, robots, HVAC systems, and facility equipment in accordance with OEM specifications and internal PM schedules.
- Conduct vibration analysis, infrared thermography, oil analysis, and ultrasonic inspections as part of the plant’s predictive maintenance program.
- Complete and accurately document all PM work orders within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) in a timely manner.
- Inspect and lubricate equipment components including gearboxes, bearings, chains, belts, couplings, and slides per lubrication schedules.
2.2 Corrective & Emergency Repairs
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic failures on production equipment to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Perform emergency breakdown repairs on a priority basis to restore production operations as quickly and safely as possible.
- Disassemble, repair, reassemble, and align mechanical components such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, presses, and material handling equipment.
- Respond promptly to maintenance calls and work effectively under pressure to resolve equipment failures during critical production runs.
2.3 Electrical & Controls
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems including motor control circuits, PLCs, sensors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and relay logic panels.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, and wiring diagrams to diagnose faults and make approved modifications.
- Install, wire, and commission motors, starters, drives, control panels, and instrumentation in compliance with local electrical codes.
- Assist with PLC program modifications under engineering supervision when required for equipment repairs or upgrades.
2.4 Facility & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Maintain facility systems including compressed air systems, water treatment equipment, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and building HVAC.
- Perform plumbing repairs, minor carpentry, welding, and fabrication tasks as required to maintain plant infrastructure.
- Support capital improvement and equipment installation projects including millwright duties such as leveling, aligning, and anchoring machinery.
- Participate in plant shutdowns and planned maintenance outages to execute major overhauls, upgrades, and installations.
2.5 Safety & Compliance
- Adhere strictly to all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures before performing any maintenance on energized equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times; report hazardous conditions immediately to supervisory personnel.
- Comply with all applicable OSHA regulations, plant safety rules, environmental guidelines, and company policies.
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action initiatives following equipment failures or near-miss incidents.
- Complete all required safety training, equipment-specific certifications, and annual recertification programs.
2.6 Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Record all maintenance activities, parts used, time spent, and equipment conditions in the CMMS accurately and promptly.
- Recommend improvements to PM procedures, spare parts inventory, and maintenance strategies based on field observations.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives including 5S, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and Kaizen events.
- Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to maintenance apprentices or less experienced technicians as required.
3. Required Qualifications
3.1 Education
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent required.
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in Millwright, Industrial Mechanic, or Electro-Mechanical Technology is strongly preferred.
- Vocational, technical school, or community college certificate or associate degree in a relevant trade discipline is an asset.
- Journeyman Millwright or Industrial Mechanic certification is an advantage.
3.2 Experience
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of hands-on maintenance experience in a manufacturing, automotive, food processing, or heavy industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience with mechanical power transmission systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and industrial electrical systems.
- Experience using a CMMS (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, MP2, Fiix) for work order management and parts requisitioning.
- Prior experience with predictive maintenance technologies and condition monitoring tools is preferred.
- Exposure to robotic systems, automated production lines, or CNC equipment is an asset.
